How do regular putters compare to belly putters and chest putters?
Question
Other than size, obviously, what are the differences between the three. In your opinion, is one better for 10 footers and another for lag putts; is one built for a arced putting path and another for a straight one; is one easier to control distance and another for square clubface? Any information will help. (I’m a lefty so i don’t have the advantage of trying multiple putters of different lengths)
Answered by Robert
To each his own, whatever works
Answered by Actual Size
I tried three different blade putters and never found one I felt good using. I found the mallet style to be much more to my liking and more consistant.

Question
Im just wondering because I dont think they should be banned because if they help someone out that should be fine?
Answered by R P
No reason to ban them.
Answered by green_lantern66
Hard to say, given the USGA and R&A’s knee-jerk reactions of the past. I’m hoping for no… there’s really no reason to ban them. Yes, Adam Scott had a sort of resurgence, Webb Simpson is doing well and Keegan Bradley won a major with one, but who else has done anything of real consequence? Keeping the small muscles quiet is a good thing for putting, but people still need to be able to read break and judge distance… a belly/long putter doesn’t help there.
Answered by Julie
Belly putters and broomstick putters should definitely be banned in my opinion, because anchoring the end of the grip to the body like a pendulum is not a fair golf stroke. The only points of contact with the club (any club) should be with the hands. The maximum length for putters should be restricted to 36″,

There are other ways around the yips with standard length putters for older guys, including the claw grip, which I now use after developing the yips, and the left hand below right grip.

BTW, I also believe that the volume and face area of drivers should be more restricted than it is, to cut down on long driving.

Of course not

While I understand the arguments for banning long putters, the time to ban them was long ago, before they became popular. To do so now would be unfair on a lot of people who rely on them to play well.

Personally I have no issue with them, even though I do not use one. Anything that keeps players in the game is a good thing, provided there is no material advantage over other players, and I don’t believe there is a material advantage with long putters. If there was then everyone would be using them.

Question
Answered by JS
they arent better, just different. it is another way to do it. it provides a single point and aids in forcing a pendulum motion for the putting stroke. it also helps to take wrist out of your putting.
Answered by Three Putt
They’re not better, although many think that the cross-handed, left-hand low grip is better.

Generally, I think belly putters are for those who can’t get the ball in the hole with conventional putters. You don’t see great putters like Crenshaw, Tiger, Stockton, etc . . . using belly putters

Answered by Jake
They are not necessarily better they are just different. Putting is mainly based on feel and personal preference. Some players may like belly putters better, some may not like it better. Players who chose to use belly putters like that it is easier to putt with, since it takes some wrist action out of their putting stroke. Take Sergio for example, he just switched to a belly putter before the Open Championship, however his putting wasn’t his strong point and was what eventually caused him to lose.
Answered by leftyjcw
I think it’s rediculous to think they are better. If they were better, wouldn’t every pro use one? They all use large, titanium drivers now. Why, because they are better. And a long putter being used in wind seems like it would be a nightmare. Use of longer putters are almost always somone “hopelessly searching” for the answer. I’m a 3 handicap, and play about 175 rounds of golf a year. Give me a 35″ Scotty Cameron blade, and I’m happy!
Answered by Rob B
Like most things, for some, they are better. For others, they aren’t. Technically, anchoring a club to the belly, chest, chin, etc. eliminates breakdown of little muscles in the wrists. Theoretically, it would make sense that it would create a truer and more consistent stroke over time. But those opposed to using it cite loss of feel, which is critical when putting. Of course, no stick can overcome failure to read greens properly.

Incidentally, European Tour legend, Colin Montgomerie, who has used alternative putters quite a bit in his career, is on record as saying that they should all be abolished. He is so convinced that they provide a distinct advantage at the world class level. Yet, no one has ever won a major championship with anything but a traditional putter. Sergio Garcia was aiming to be the first-ever at the British Open.

Question
I have one i just was wondering if you use both hands together or one just bellow your belly and the other about a foot down
Answered by Average Joe
My best friend has a belly putter. He uses his left hand to hold the top of the grip next to his belly. His other hand is about two feet lower. He swings it like a pendulum. I don’t think it’s helped his putting, but then again he’s not a good putter either way. (don’t tell him I said that – ha ha)
Answered by johncondo2001
I have one I do one below the stomach and one a foot down
Answered by Rob
Yes, people use them, a good friend of mine whom is a scratch golfer uses one loves it. I have considered it myself as well. I would recomend using both hands together to take advantage of the pendulum motion created by the extra length. Only when using a longer putter, like one that comes to below your chin would I use one hand by your chin and one below your waist. Regaardless of which be sure to keep your elbows in and, wrists locked.

This site tells you all about it and exaclty how to do it: http://www.anyonefortee.com/Tips/Belly.html

You’re supposed to the anchor the top of the grip in your belly and then hold it with your hands together down the grip just like a regular putter.

Here are some good picture on how to do it: http://www.kching.com/images/Kching2.jpg

for poor putters like i was they remove the wrists and end flipping because they are anchored. good putters don’t have these types of problems so hate its restrictions
