Question
My fiance has gotten into golfing alot over the past few months. He has been purchasing and upgrading his clubs as he goes, but I noticed he doesn’t have any woods and I would like to get that for him as a birthday gift. I apologize in advance if anything I say is off, I no nothing about golf so please forgive me! I’ve spoken to my dad about these clubs, and all I was able to get out of the conversation was that all my fiance really needs is a 3 wood and that I should look into a hybrid one. I thought that would help me out alot, but boy was I wrong! Basically I am just looking for recommendations. What do you use and how do you like it? Also, what is “loft”? Which is better, graphite shaft or steel? And how do you know what flex is right for you?

I know it’s a personal thing and I should let him pick it out, I just would really like to try to pick a good one out and surprise him first. If he doesn’t like it then he can choose a different one.

have him find it and then tell him you guys dont have enough for it and then buy it for him
Answered by danbettin
I would recommend getting him a hybrid club. The hybrids are much easier to hit than fairway woods and he’ll be able to hit more shots with it. Also hybrids are easier to hit out of the rough and allow you to hit the ball higher.
As for the type of hybrid…I would go with a 18 degree loft and a graphite stiff shaft for him…graphite allows for more forgiveness and the stiff shaft is good if he has a fast swing speed.
When talking about brands…Adams, Nike, and Taylor Made make the best hybrids…it all depends on what you want to spend. I play with Adams hybrids and I love them. Each of their hybrids sell for about $ 150 a piece.

Most golfers like to have the woods, driver, 3 and 5 woods from the same company. If he has replaced his driver, he would probably like a 3 from the same company. For woods, graphite shafts are preferred and most golfers, especially newbies need regular shaft.

The hybrid you mentioned is meant to replace his 2-4 irons. They are easier to hit than irons.

If price is an issue, you can get quality used drivers and irons from Callaway used golf equipment.

Brand name in golf is important to most guys, Callaway, Nike, and Taylormade are probably most named drivers.

When all else fails, gift card will work at pro shops or super stores like Dicks.

Question
I want to build a queen size loft bed. I was wondering if I could just attach long legs to the box spring. I would put pieces of wood (maybe 3 pieces) going from one leg to another to make it stronger (at the head and foot of the bed),like a ladder. Then maybe some pieces of wood forming like an “x” at the side thats up against the wall. Can I use the wooded box spring frame as my top of the loft?
Answered by Irv S
That box spring is designed to be firmly supported along both long sides,
and will not take any significant torque.
What you propose would not be very stable.
Those “long legs” would have to be braced somehow to hold them
in proper relationship to the wall side support.
You’d be best advised to build a full frame.
Answered by c_kayak_fun
NO, the wooden frame on a box spring is not structurally sound enough for that. If you notice, the seperate frame that goes under a queen box spring when you set one up on the floor has steel or wooden rails that support the full length of both sides of the box spring plus a strip of steel or wood down the center to support it in the middle. What you are describing would not be safe. A person moving around in their sleep puts a lot of stress on a bed frame — you don’t want to break through and get hurt.

You can get what is called a “flat spring”, a strong metal grid that can be securely bolted to your wooden loft to support a mattress (you don’t need a box spring for a loft bed — it takes too much space — just use a mattress or thick piece of foam.) I would suggest you go to furniture stores and look at how the loft beds are constructed to get some good ideas.

You can also download free diagrams on-line with designs and dimensions for building loft beds. Just Google “free loft bed plans”

Question
The machine at my local golf store is not very accurate (salesman said so) but he estimates that my driver swing speed is somewhere between 80 and 95 mph. I can hit my 15 degree 3 wood about 200 yards (it is steel shaft). I am a 27 year old male.
Answered by gorilla
A 10 to 12 degree loft.
Answered by Wes D
10.5 degrees is a good starting point. You hit a good 3W so I’m guessing your handicap is reasonable as well. Your swing speed is mid range so 10.5 deg is best bet and it will enable you to get the ball in the air quicker. If you are are looking for more distance instead you can look at a 9.5 or 9 degree lofted driver these have lower launch angle and tend to run on more than a 10.5 deg but can be hard to hit. You mention your 3W is s/steel shaft also your swing speed suits a graphite shaft as well so something extra to think about for a bit more control and distance. Good scoring.

9.5 degree I think.
Answered by Jason G
Well, you can get custom fitted for your clubs. My swing speed is similar and I use a 10.5 degree driver. I don’t miss a lot of fairways either. Today I played 9 holes and missed 2 out of 7 fairways.
Answered by David
9.5 degree

Take him out with you to lunch, and stop by the store to go and get his club. this will make the surprise as good as the purchase, because it is failsafe. Graphite is better though. I bought a 15* Nike Sumo three wood and love it. It flys straight and far.

  2. dsaleh says:

the taylormade r7 3 wood is probably your best bet for a new golfer. this club will be on the pricier side, but it is worth it. your fiance will love it, i am sure. another choice that is possible for a 3 wood is getting the same brand, and model as the driver he has, but remember not to buy him the driver

Get a Titleist 907 15* 3- wood and a 19* 3 iron taylormade burner rescue club I have both and it is comfortable having 2 safe options off the tee

  4. Pinnacle says:

Try out all degrees between 8-10.5 and pick wich ever one you hit the best ball flight with . Average players hit with a 10.5 lower handicaps will mostly have 8-9.5 degree

  5. Connor says:

The faster the swing speed, the lower the loft, is generally how it goes. By your specs it looks like you’re a pretty good golfer. I’d say probably about 10 or 10.5 degrees. A professional golfer’s driver loft is usually anywhere from 6 to 9 degrees. But they have super fast swings. But to be sure, you should go get fitted for a driver at your local golf pro shop or retail store. It’s only about $ 30 to be fitted for shaft length, stiffness, shaft type, driver model, and loft.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Den says:

i use 8.5 but my swing is about 125
    so you should use 10.5

  7. Avatar Addict says:

    9.5
