Question
I am a golf beginner, 14 years old.
I was practicing with an 8-iron club (in the driving range) with an average distance of 75 yards.
Then I switched to a 2-iron club with an average distance of (surprise) 80 yards.
Why is this, isn’t the 2-iron supposed to drive the ball a further 100 yards?
Answered by reidandsmythltd
If you hit an 8 Iron it will go higher than the flight of a 2 Iron, are you hitting both clubs with the same strength?
have you had any lessons from a golf pro? if you have not then before you get into bad habits, with swing ,stance etc go to a golf pro at the driving range and get a couple of lessons.

All the best keep the golf up.

Answered by savvy61
you’re hitting incorrectly – see a pro
average 8 iron – 120 to 140 yds
average 2 iron – 180 to 200 yds

Dear 64′ G,

As a beginner you are not striking the ball with much consistency. Proper instruction, patience and practice will result in identifying the approximate distance each club provides. I am assuming the clubs you describe are of the same model and have a progressive length difference. Visit a local club maker and at the very least have the length adjusted so the lie angle, (measured in degrees from the shaft and the head in a proper position). To save money adjust the length to approximatelyy the amount of your growth. Install or have the club maker install new grips. As a beginner try to get at least one season from your set of clubs. Also note that hitting a 2 iron is problematic for almost every amateur player let alone a beginner. You would best be served byacquiringg a hybrid or a 5 or 7 metalwoodd. A cautionary note: my suggestion on a simple length adjustment with new grips is a temporary fix and also includes the possibility of a stiffer flex and other issues. Once you decide you want to step up to the next playing level getting a properly fit set of clubs should be part of the process even if you have to do it one or a few clubs at a time.

The distance differences you are experiencing is caused by mishitting the ball with a novice swing at best. If youcommitt yourself to improvement you will soon see a difference of about 10 yards between the irons. An average high school player at 14 years old hits a 8 iron about 145 yards for boys and 125 yards for girls. There are exceptions but these numbers are based on teaching and testing over 350 freshmen players. The variables andreasonss are too numerous for this answer format but it assumes a center strike on the club face with a swing speed of 70 to 80 MPH with standard loft angles. Years ago manufacturers and designers began to lower the lofts and misinformed players thought the clubs made them hit the ball further, the reality was to lower the loft so that you may be playing with a loft on an 8 iron which can be +/- 5 degrees either way.

Try to practice at a golf learning center with electronic devices designed to give you distance and other factors which contribute to ball flight. If you can’t do this find a facility with flags accuratelymeasuredd when you practice. Ay amazon.com buy a used or new copy of “Golf My Way” authored by Jack Nicklaus. I consider it the bible for golfers of all levels. In one season following practical methods you will improve tremendously. Golf is a funny game. The better you get the more difficult it is to get better. You will improve by as many as 20 strokes for 18 holes and a few years from now lowering your handicap from a ten to a five is very, very difficult.

Should you have the financial means to acquire a professionally fit set of clubs make sure you select a brand with some resale or potential trade in value. In my experience Ping clubs offer this option and hold their value longer and higher over the years. That same professional fitting should include close attention to configuring the set to your personal playing abilities and personal goals.

Best of luck and your question is one I have heard from almost every student I taught. You’ll laugh about it one day because it’s just part of learning a very frustrating and difficult game to become proficient in. Welcome to the greatest game ever played.

Loft of the face and total length of the club are factors in distance. There are multiple reasons why the 2 iron went “only” 80 yards, most commonly, because 2 irons are so freaking hard to hit. It’s easy to hit it off the toe or heel, which would cause a considerable amount of distance loss. It could also be that the club is just not right (too long, too stiff, lie angles are off, etc.) for you. Get rid of it and find a 5 wood or a hybrid- MUCH easier to hit!
Question
I am looking to buy a new set of Iron golf clubs and I found a set that I would like to buy but they have two different versions of them and I am unsure what one to get. I can get them as STIFF or FLEX now what one should I get? Also I am unsure what STIFF or FLEX means so please explain when tell me what one I should get.
Answered by Brian
it is stiff flex that is just how much flex is in the club i hit the ball about 285-300 yards consistently and i use x flex clubs if you cant hit it that far you might want a stiff or regular flex depends on how far you hit it

ps you probably havent played golf much if you separate the words stiff and flex

Answered by Josh E
The stiff shaft on golf clubs means that the shaft is not going to bend or Flex during your golf swing. If you have a fairly fast golf swing you want to stick with the stiff. When the clubs say flex it means that the shaft is going to bend during your downswing causing the head of the club to whip through faster. These clubs are designed for someone that does not have a fast or powerful swing. You can swing easy and still get distance on your ball.
Answered by Golf Digger
Go to Golf Galaxy or your local golf shop that has a launch monitor. They’ll figure out what your swing speed is and be able to suggest the proper flex for your swing!! Golf Galaxy uses a Vector Pro launch monitor which is pretty cool. It will tell you what your ball speed, club head speed, launch angle, and rpm’s for backspin and sidespin. All of this will help the pro determine what you’ll need!! Or you can check more info about the clubs at http://www.discountsgolfclubs.com

If you are a beginner, I recommand you the Regular flex, then stiff flex when you play golf better.
Answered by knh959
It’s not STIFF or FLEX. The flex is the whippiness (for lack of a better term) of the shaft of the iron. Basically there are four flexes to choose from – extra stiff, generally used only by touring pros. stiff – used by golfers with swing speeds of 95 mph and up; regular flex, used by golfers who’s swing speeds are in the 80-95 mph range, this is the most commonly used flex. Senior flex for slow swing speeds and some manufactures produce ladies flex as well.

Different shaft manufacturers may vary slightly from the above but basically that’s pretty close. What you need to do, is get your clubhead speed measured. From that point you can decide on which flex you want. Remember though, that the stiffer the flex the more difficult it can be to hit the ball well, so if your swing speed falls somewhere close to the point where you could go up to a stiffer flex you should probably go with the less stiff flex.

Question
I am fourteen years old and I have been playing most of my life. I have a terrible set of irons and really need to make a change. I just need some advice on good clubs that I could purchase.
Answered by david
How many years do you play ? If you have been playing golf for over 2years, you can try some good professional clubs, just like tylarmade R7 series. My son also like playing, and he is 16, and have played for 3 years, i bought R7 CGB full set for him from http://www.golfinstock.com, where is cheap.
Answered by mhm
definatly not, get the nike slingshots. they just came out with a new set and theyre very forgiving and give a nice power boost without swinging as hard as normal. Go demo them but if you dont like them try a set of ping g5s or the comparitive iron set
Answered by J Z
i have a set of nike cpr irons but i like my dads calloway x20

I have a set of Tommy Armour Morph irons that are very nice.
Try searching for them on ebay or something like that.
I got mine for $ 500 and I would rate the clubs an 8 out of 10 at least.

Question
Title says it all. I was wondering since the CG7 are older I think but how many years does Cleveland Release new irons?
Answered by green_lantern66
Every year, usually around April. Don’t worry, though, those CG7′s are just as good as anything they’re going to release, or have released since those sticks came out. Physics doesn’t change annually just because the marketing departments try to make you think they do.

What you could do is improve your power with tips off this ebook I found. I could hit balls a hundred yards with a broom after reading this thing. check it out here. http://golfswingnumberone.blogspot.com/

  2. spartaworld.combat says:

There are many suggestions listed here and all have some truths in them. However, taking that you are 14 and an amateur golfer let’s consider a few things. Hitting distances depends on three things: club length, stance (how you address the ball), and swing ( mainly the back swing).
Now beginners have a habit of swing back swiftly, which often takes them of balance and off line to striking the ball. Bring the club, any club in a smooth, slow windup and then swiftly return to the point of impact to the ball. Remember that stance is where you align the ball. Closer to the right heel for 8,9 clubs to get loft and back spin. Closer to left heel for long flat hits with 4,3,2,1, clubs. 7 & 6 clubs can be used midway between feet. This is only a beginning to golf so prat ice and see the difference. As for length of clubs, try to shorten your hold down further on the grip and see if it fits your height and reach better.

  3. NANO says:

The distance is not only related to your strength or skill, but also with the length of irons. You can see it. with the longer irons when you swing, you can get more strength ,as a result the ball go further.

  4. J says:

The best way to determine if you should get stiff or flex is to have your clubhead swing speed measured. This can be done in any reputable golf shop. Someone with a low clubhead speed would get regular flex and someone with a fast speed would get a stiff flex.
