The Ping i5 iron is a mid-size iron with less offset and a thinner top-line than the G5 iron model. The larger tuning ports stabilize the face of the club head, and improve sound and feel. The set’s enhanced perimeter weighting increases the moment of inertia for longer, straighter distance, particularly on off-center hit. A radiused leading edge ensures consistent, solid impact through the hitting area.

Question
I’ve been toying with getting a new set of irons for a year or two now. I’ve never really been able to get out on the course enough to justify dropping the cash on a new set of clubs. Back in high school, my uncle gave me a set of Ping Eye 2′s that I absolutely loved until the older brother stole them. Now I’m using some Hogan Edge irons that I can hit very well up until about the 5 iron. I have to hit the things absolutely pure for them to go anywhere resembling a straight line…otherwise its a shank off into the woods. Don’t even ask me about the 3 iron, that club singlehandedly made me buy a 7 wood that I use in all situations, even one that would favor an iron. It’s been working fairly well for me, about 210-220 consistently, but I’d like to get back into the higher irons.

I’ve been going to the local golf shop and trying out the i15′s and really like them a lot…it seems a lot easier to get solid contact on the 3-5 irons, but I’ve noticed that I don’t get the same feeling from a really solid hit like I did on the old Hogans (relics they may be ). I also don’t have the ability to try them out at a range to see the ball flight, but I can normally tell from the feel of the club whether or not I at least hit a solid shot that would go where I wanted.

Before I buy, are there any other comparables out there that I should give a try? I’m about a 15-18 handicap golfer, but mainly due to putting…I’m normally on and putting for par about 12 holes per round, and when I’m not in that situation, it’s usually because I put my second shot 100 yards up and 30 yards to the right/left!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

As a side note, I have been playing with these Hogans for about 5 years now, so I am used to playing with very, very difficult irons. I actually took my 5 iron in to the store to compare with the i15 in the indoor range and that difference was unbelievable. Three people actually gave me a hard time about my club!

They are definitely good irons. I have gotten the chance to demo them and I really enjoyed them. However, I would say they are meant for the lower handicaps and don’t offer as much forgiveness and workability that other irons do. If you really enjoy the feel of them you should really consider getting them. Have you tried out any other iron sets besides the i15s? Send me a message and I can help you out further, and give you more suggestions, i’d be happy to help you.

Here’s also a good review of the i15s.

Question
I am getting back into golf after a 4 year break. Used to shoot in low 90s on moderate level courses. I noticed some good prices and reviews on these two sets. Which one would people recommend (in general)? Or are there other recommendations in this price range for a new set of irons ($ 400 ish, the pings were used twice and owner wants to unload at that price).
Thanks in advance!!

I like the Taylor made but that’s a matter of opinion. You might look at ebay and find a set of used clubs, they have many brands to bid on at any given time at really good prices

I prefer the r7 irons, I’ve been playing them for 2 years now and don’t see myself buying a new set anytime soon.

But, you should go to a golf store and hit them both to see which you like better.

Question
My father has always used Ping golf clubs. After a year of playing golf he handed me down his Ping S56 irons and bought himself Ping G10 iron set. Not sure which model Driver and Woods he handed down to me but they were also Ping. But since im growing older i want to buy my own set in the future and i need good assistance. I know it all comes down to which ever one suites me best but i want assistance in which golf manufacturer have the best quality clubs. Thank you.

There isn’t any distinction anymore. Ping was the last American made major OEM, and even they moved their production facilities over to China. Now, they’re all made either there or in Taiwan, depending on the style of head. Forged models are done in Japan or China. They’re made by the same people making the same crappy wages, with the same machines, to the same standards.

What’s more, driver technology hasn’t changed since 2006; it’s been maxed out in every conceivable (and useful) means since then. Yes, there’s the adjustability thing, but if you’re properly fitted in the first place, that’d be taken care of regardless if you went with an adjustable or standard hosel. Iron and wedge technology hasn’t evolved in an even longer time… well, it has, but the results have been unacceptable (in the form of either “too bulky”, too blocky”, or “just plain ugly”) to the golfing public, so the innovations get only one production run and are scrapped out for something more “normal” looking (think the Nike SuMo irons, or the Cobra S9 irons- the one with the plastic topline).

If you’re dad bought all of his clubs at the same time, you’re going to have the most up-to-date set technologically possible. Just get them retrofitted to your swing and body type. They’ll last you for a LONG time.

There are a number of manufacturers that make quality golf equipment, not just Ping. Brands like Nike, Mizuno, TaylorMade, Cleveland, Callaway, Cobra, Titleist, Srixon, etc. make quality equipment as well. I’ve played some of the previous mentioned equipment(Cleveland wedge, Mizuno irons, TaylorMade fairway wood). I play all Nike equipment now and am quite happy with it. You can go to any pro shop and try out different equipment to see what feels right to you. Try out a demo day at your local pro shop if they’re still having them.

P.S. I’ve played a Ping driver and fairway woods before as well.
