Question
Currently a senior in high school and looking to upgrade my irons for this season and for college next year. I’ve had Cobra 3400 ih irons for 3 years now and looking to upgrade to a nicer set of irons but I am on a tight budget. I am currently a 4 handicap but am a short ball hitter; I rely on my accuracy and chipping to keep me at the top of the competition. My approximate distances are as follows:

4 iron – 180 yards
5 iron – 170 yards
6 iron – 160 yards
7 iron – 150 yards
8 iron – 140 yards
9 iron – 130 yards
PW – 120 yards

I am looking for a used set of Mizuno irons on eBay for less than $ 225 4-PW. My wishes are to gain some playability and control over my irons; preferably some irons that are very accurate. What set or Mizuno irons should I get or is there any other model of iron you would suggest? Please justify your reasoning, thank you very much!

First off my email, ww05002@yahoo.com if you want the long answer.

I live in Myrtle Beach SC and when I first moved here (14 yrs ago) and I worked as a bartender who’s co-worker made the old Nike Tour. He showed me a thing or two…But the main thing was this. Buy ANYTHING…get yourself on the driving range with knock-off clubs for about 89.00 (ebay or walmart…and if after a month of hitting that range …if you want it, then GET FITTED but with your fitted numbers AGAIN, BUY KNOCK OFFS. then after a few months sell it all and get fitted one more time and buy the real deal. Callaway has great forgiving clubs some DC 90′s are good and even oversized Top-Flite are decent too. Skip the 2-iron and don’t worry about the 64Deg Wedge.

before my 10th game I was in the 90′s and before my 20th game I was in the 80′s…I carry a 5 Hdcp and an index of 4.7 (index is more important)

Putt barefoot …walk your line so you can feel the minor mounds…practice driving the ball barefoot…when you get your balance you’ll drive about 10-20% better with spikes…and for kicks (if you have the chance) play a round with one club (no putter) just to make it fun again. (once shot 2 under and I forgot my putter…I was Pis*ed off…but smiling when I posted the score)…

True, more than 14 clubs, but I select the 14 I need depending on the course rating/index. Most likely I will leave the diver at home along with the 3 iron or 64 Deg.

Yes, I still play barefoot here and there…and I will also play Ladies, Senior, Men’s, Pro Tees and alternate them for a fun round with friends. (try it, it gives you a chance to explore your other irons and approach shots)

PS, First Hole in One Buck Creek Myrtle Beach SC…
9 Months in to golfing (lucky) 141 Par 3, 9-Iron.

PSS…I play Precept LadyIQ180 Pink. I find that I get similar distance then pro-v1 with the factor of surprise.

(pink tee’s to match for that intimidation factor.)

Question
I seem to have lost yardage and consistency with my new mizuno mx 19 irons. ball flight goes to the left, its like im hitting draw irons, but i’m not… i dont understand why i hit better on my older set, is this maybe because i haven’t adjusted to them yet? im getting frustrated, the past 2 rounds haven’t been nice… please help…

There are any number of reasons you may be experiencing this. 1. you may have developed a swiing flaw. 2 shaft flex is not right for you. 3. Shaft kick point is not right for you. and about 5 or 6 others…… I’d advise a quick trip to a Pro to look things over for you. He or she will be able to give you the answers pretty quick that you seek.

I’ll take them.

Answered by lorkin
So why did you buy them? I bet you thought they would improve your game. Happens all the time.
wbaker77 is right. It could be any number of things and you need to have someone take a look. Are the shafts the same flex as your old set? That is where I would start.
Otherwise the offer that raffy527 has made is worth considering. Go back to your old ones and play better.
Answered by dennis w
take your clubs to a good club maker in your area have been fitted on a loft in line machine and check your swing and he can correct that there’s something wrong with the irons usually a small adjustments makes a world of difference
Answered by googie
Were your new Mizuno irons fitted to your swing or did you buy them off the rack? New tools do not make the mechanic any better. They just give others the impression that the player is better. Why don’t you have your old clubs checked against the new Mizunos as to weight, swing weight, shaft flex, lie angle and determine the differences. Therein may lie the problem.
Question
Caught these irons as demos from Golfsmith. They look to be in very good shape around 8.5 to 9 rating. Could the Rifle 4.0 shafts have been original on these clubs also? I do prefer an easy flex though. So what are they?
Answered by Pixie Chick
Flex is, in part, a factor of club length and head weight. Unfortunately, there is no standard measure of flex among manufacturers but the Rifle 4.0 shaft is designed to play soft – suitable for an average women or senior, I believe.

Rifles are frequency matched from the factory so they are not tip cut for the purpose of changing their intended flex.

Rifles are one of the few with a good understanding of flex. Yes a 4.0 is a soft flex best suited to ladies or seniors with slower swing speeds.

Options and Availability on the Mizuno MX 300 irons
Again, lefties get left out in the cold, as the MX-300 is only available in right-handed models. The standard shaft is the True Temper Dynalite Gold, though you have the option of the R300 or S300. If you prefer a different shaft, custom grips, or adjusted loft/lie angle, the Mizuno Custom Department is available to meet all of your needs. It is notable that the standard set includes 4-GW, though a 3 iron is available. The MSRP is $ 900, which is considerably lower than that of the MX-1000. So if they were originals they were custom ordered.
