It’s on the USGA list of conforming drivers. You can see the list in its entirety here:

some early 540s were declared illegal, the 580s all made are legal . still equal to anything out there with a shaft upgrade , definatly a keeper . best thing is you can go on a launch monitor be fitted for a shaft have brand new driver for less than 100 dollars , some are selling for 40 dollars versus 500 i am still trying to find spare one since i fluked right shafts for 20 dollars . hang on to it .
Answered by toughnottobeacynic
If it has the 8 small grooves in the middle of the club face it’s conforming.
Answered by Tom on Tour
The “illegal” version has no center score lines on the face.
Question
i am a beginner and i can drive a good distance with a good club head speed. But with the driver i have now i slice the ball alot and sometimes almost bad enough that it looks like it is about to come right back after doing a loop. so i have been looking for a new driver and the Taylor made Tour TP burner looks good and from the reviews sounds good. is this a good driver for me?
if not, what would be a good driver for me
Answered by Ml
Absolutely not! TP drivers are made for very low handicappers, and usually have 1 degree open clubfaces.
Try a Callaway FT-5 or FT-9 Draw. Taylormade Burner Draw, also good fit for you. Any draw driver will fix your slice, somewhat…but a lesson or 2 can do that too. You want something that has a sweetspot the size of New York.

Good luck…and have fun…it’s a great game!

Answered by aledjdy
If you’re slicing the ball with any driver, you should take lessons, not look for the latest/best driver for your swing. If you aren’t that seriously into golf, get a draw model as it will help moderately with your slice.
Answered by Dark Blue Knight
I would go with a Callaway FTI, I use to slice a lot too and since I got that one I don’t slice as often! (about 70% less)
Answered by Haydon
Spend the money on lessons instead. Any driver that is a ‘Tour’ version is usually designed for better players and is only going to make your slice worse.

Cure your swing faults first, then you can reward yourself with an new driver if you wish. If you currently use a very low loft, try something like 10.5-12 degree, which can also help minimize slicing if you dont quite middle your shot.

Not to be rude, but if you’re hitting a boomerang and not just a fade, you need lessons and not a new driver.

Specifically, since you’re a beginner and think you have a good club head speed, you’re probably like many beginners and focusing on the wrong thing. A 108SS with an open face, off-centered hit is crap. A 95SS with a proper swing path, dead-centered hit will out drive you every time.

I’d also bet a dollar to a donut that you’re blocking. You probably think you’re swinging fast and hard, but your hands aren’t catching up to your body. This will invariably leave the clubface wide open at impact and you’ll hit the boomerang.

1. Try concentrating on keeping your eyes/head very still and behind the ball at impact. This ALONE corrected my fade/slice.
2. Make sure you’re on balance. If at any time you feel like you’re tipping over the ball or have to take a step to keep from falling over, you’re way off balance and probably swinging too hard.
3. AFTER YOU’VE MASTERED 1 & 2… If you’re still fading and want a draw, try closing your clubface *slightly*, try a stronger (not tighter) grip, and if it’s still not helping enough, try moving your right foot back slightly after you address the ball (assuming you’re batting righty).

Also, check your backswing. When you stop in your backswing, is the club almost vertical? If so, then you’re probably coming over the top of the ball which means fade/slice. Make sure when you’re at the end of your backswing, you look at the club and make sure it’s at an angle, almost like resting on your shoulder versus pointing at the noon sun. The butt of the club when at the 9 oclock position should be pointing at a line extending from the target back through the ball, not at your heel line (unless you’re Jim Furyk).

Only after you’ve got all this down do you need to consider new equipment. As much as TM would like you to believe you can buy a better game, you apparently need lessons at this juncture. If the money is just burning a hole in your pocket, email me and I’ll tell you where you can send it. I normally charge $ 65 for the above lesson. Read it 4 times and send me $ 300 (tip included).

Question
Tell me what you like and dislike about it.
Answered by Ohio_Golfer34
I hit it at a demo day here….I didn’t like the feel or the ball flight for my game. I hit a draw and that club made it more of a hook….there is defintely some draw enhancements working on it.

It looked alright and went the same distance as the other drivers…just crooked!

So I bought the Cobra Speed Pro X…..great driver….although loud!

Good luck!

Answered by Jake N
Callaway Big Bertha all the way. Not a new model but it will hit the ball farther than anyother driver. Don’t waste your money on a BRAND new one when a $ 200 Big Bertha will be better.
Answered by CJB
Nothing special, i ballooned the ball when i hit it. I am getting a Cobra Speed LD instead.
Answered by wbaker777
My opinion is that it is the “newest” Version of the TP and not a really great new incarnation at that. I hit it at demo days before I bought my R7……I guess you could say I was less than impressed.
Question
the first driver made by metal
Answered by Burton Boarder
Ya, what do you what to know about it?
Answered by IceCube
I think you’re right. They made the first steel head driver call pitsburg steel, followed by Taylor made burner. I used burner before, then again, they sold the company to Addidas already..

They are good, but like any driver hit it first to make sure you get the right one. Go to their website and find a demo day in your area so they can fit you.

TaylorMade Introduces r7 Draw Combo Set
Available November 2006

Press Release
Posted 2006-12-08

Recently, the TaylorMade Golf Company introduced a new line of golf equipment called r7 Draw, aimed at improving golfers who need help hitting a draw or softening a slice. The r7® Draw family includes a 460 cc driver, fairway woods, Rescue® clubs and irons, each sold separately.

Now TaylorMade has introduced the r7 Draw Combo Set, an eight-club set that combines two r7 Draw Rescue clubs (3 and 4) and six r7 Draw irons (5- through pitching wedge). A women’s r7 Draw Combo set is also available, consisting of two r7 Draw Rescue clubs (4 and 5) plus six r7 Draw irons (6-iron through attack wedge).

“More and more players, from tour professionals to club champions to high handicappers, are replacing their long-irons with Rescue clubs,” said Sean Toulon, TaylorMade’s executive vice president of product and brand creation. “That’s especially true for the type of player that needs help hitting a draw. By offering the r7 Draw Combo set, players don’t have to spend money on two long-irons that they don’t intend to use.”

The r7 Draw Combo set (men’s and ladies’) will be available at TaylorMade’s retail partners starting in mid-November, at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $ 840 in steel and $ 1,080 in graphite.

“We’re confident that many players will choose the r7 Draw Combo set based not only on the virtues of our Draw-Weighted Technology, but also on TaylorMade’s expertise at developing the best hybrid clubs in golf,” said Toulon.

TaylorMade has ranked an overwhelming No. 1 in hybrid use on the PGA Tour. More TaylorMade Rescues were put in play in 2006 than the next two competitors combined.* TaylorMade won 45 out of 48 hybrid counts on the PGA Tour in 2006, making it the clear choice amongst the world’s best players.* TaylorMade is also the hybrid of choice among non tour players – TaylorMade has ranked No. 1 in hybrid sales in the U.S. in 2003, 2004, 2005 and so far in 2006.**

  1. John S says:

It might be. I agree with posters in that you should probably get a lesson or try and figure out why. It usually comes from an open club face but there can be a lot of reasons for that. Some of the problem can stem from equipment so try before you buy. There are plenty of good drivers out there and Taylor Made is one of them. I’m a big fan of Tour Edge Exotics (the original model) and Versus. Both look pretty conventional but there is a lot of technology under the hood. Here’s something to try, put a couple pieces of lead tape near the heal (back of club) of your present driver. If your slice goes away look for a driver with heal weighting if it doesn’t get a driver a with a slightly closed face. Good Luck.

  2. Henrique says:

I think you should get a driver from top flite because you you are a beginner you will not go well at all with the burner since it is one of the best drivers

  3. leftyjcw says:

I bought one. A 9.5 Stiff. The extra length of the shaft was uncomfortable for me. I removed the grip and trimmed it 3/4″ and it was better, but go for the R7′s or Super Quad if you want Taylor Made. I am currently using the Speed Pro Cobra 10.5 and it is very comfortable. Cobra on the comeback.
