Callaway Diablo Edge Irons, Cobra S3 Max Irons or Taylormade Burner 2009 Irons?
Question
PLEASE only comment if you are a golf pro, an avid golfer, pro shop manager etc…

I am a 14 year old golfer. I have been golfing since I was 8 and I golf at least twice a week, with my friends or family. I have an old set of Powerbilt Citations my grandfather handed me down, and although I have played decently with them for two years, I was thinking that I need a set of game improving clubs, rather than player clubs, considering my age. Also, the clubs are from the 1960′s, so I am over 50 years behind in club technology… Thanks for your opinions!

The Diablo set was a late addition. I am paying for the clubs by myself unless my parents can pitch in, then possibly the Diablo’s may come into reason.

I personally would use the Taylormade irons because they are much more forgiving than the Cobra set. But the Callaway’s would be a good set to use as they are good value for money. Either callaway or Taylormade as they are more forgiving and consistent for a player like you.
Answered by Eddie Law
My suggestion is Callaway Diablo Edge Irons. The Diablo Edge irons provide increased distance without compromising feel or performance. A lower, deeper CG is designed to make the sweet spot more accessible at lower impact locations.
Answered by legalbgl
If you are hitting your clubs the distances that you say with the clubs you are playing now then forget game improvement irons. You need more of an intermediate set.
Answered by CrashCarson
I would say the cobra s3 max. I have those irons and my dad has the diablo edge. I’ve hit the Taylormade burner 2009s and they aren’t bad. I found that the Diablo edge does not have as good of feel as the s3 max and the Taylormade burners we’re sort of in between. The s3 and diablos are newer compared to the taylormades (if that matters to you) and the Taylormades are game improvement compared to super game improvement like the s3 and diablos. Best thing to do is go to the store and try them out for yourself. Good luck!
Answered by Jared
if you need forgiveness get the cobras but if you want performance, get the callaway
Question
I am a 14 handicap.
My set includes:
TaylorMade R7 460 Driver 10.5* Reg Flex (neutral weights)
TaylorMade R580 3 Wood & 5 Wood
TaylorMade R7 Draw 22* Hybrid
TaylorMade R7 Draw Irons 5-PW
Nike SV Tour Wedges (52, 56, 60)
Rossa Mezza Monza Putter
Ball: TaylorMade Burner TP
Answered by Jen
You are just bragging about your clubs. Those clubs are for a +5 handicap. You should be better than a 14 with such good clubs!
Answered by Hartdawg
First of all a 14 handicap is not as bad as some may think. Its not awesome, but if its a true handicap, its not too bad.

Clubs are very good clubs if they are the right fit for you with flex and draw and what not. I would change balls if I were you to a Pro V or Callaway Black.

Golf…….its addictive :-)

Good Luck,

Hartdawg

Answered by mttmook
its not what clubs you have its how well you use them ( they are good clubs )
Answered by Golfer at WTC
Yeah agreed with others

They are good clubs on paper or by design, but its how you play with them that counts. Like Tiger Woods he hits an awesome ball with his Nike blades or whatever, whereas phil mickelson hits the ball better with the callaway irons.

Its no good having the newest clubs or the best clubs if you can’t hit them!

But Yeah overall they are pretty decent clubs!

Answered by Dave K
it seems to me you like to draw the ball with your irons, and the TP burner is not a good ball for that…..

use a titelist or a nike ball

Question
i have a set of taylormade r7 draw irons that came with a pitching wedge. i recently got a cleveland cb14 60 degree wedge and would like to get 2 more. i also want to buy a taylormade burner hybrid and a taylormade burner 3 and 5 wood. my question is which should i get first? one of the 2 wedges? the 3 or 5 wood? or the hybrid? i really need to know soon!
Answered by Steve H
How do you hit your long irons? If badly, is your answer, get a 5-wood or utility first. I would suggest the utility first because you may find you don’t need a 5-wood after all.

If you are going to carry 3 wedges, then probably you will not carry all the long irons because you cannot exceed 14 clubs total in your bag. D, putter, 3 wedges gives you 9 more to choose from.

Utility takes you to 8. I don’t see a sand wedge listed anywhere. I would make that my next wedge buy and depending on your game, maybe the sand wedge before the utility club.

And remember, “Be the ball.”

Answered by dustin f
I would recommend getting the hybrid first. They are very versatile and they will be the club to lower your handicap quicker.
Answered by GOLFING LEGEND
well i would say the 3 wood
Question
be honest, please:

Driver: Taylormade Burner TP, (old burner) 10.5, regular shaft
woods: 3+5, Taylormade Burner TP (old) regular shaft
irons: Nike ignite, although i was thinking of burner irons….
wedges: Nike SV tour
putter: odyssey tri ball srt
ball: bridgestone E6
bag: Nike Extreme III sport carry.

Answered by c g +1
There is nothing in here that is cause for concern. All of these clubs are made of the latest materials and by major manufacturers. There should be very good golf in this set.
Answered by googie
So ! What do you want to know? You tell us nothing of your swing speed, the lie angle of your clubs, the distance you attain from them. So if you like the clubs, nothing else matters.
Answered by Gilly
Nice set. Have you thought about replacing either your 5 wood and your 3 and possibly 4 iron with hybrids? gives you more options for play, chipping round the green etc. Also try the Topflite Gamer as a ball, I think it gets better performance and bite than the e5 and e5+

Since you have to pay yourself, consider saving about half the cost by purchasing a high quality clone of the types of clubs that you mentioned. Check out the attached.

These are manufactured with the same materials and using the same manufacturing process and will perform every bit as well as the cool brands that you mentioned.

I would personally go with the S3 Max irons. I am considering them for a new iron set. I am also considering the Diablo Edge as well. I personally do not like TaylorMade. They are all good choices though. Try to go to a pro shop and try them out if you can to see what irons work best for you. Check the link I put…it’s good info. Good luck!

  3. Toby says:

I use the callaways. The design of the diablo edge’s move the sweet spot lower on the club, which means it is more forgiving. They are great for avid golfers trying to improve there game. You can get the clubs around 300 dollars on ebay. So look around

I really dig the new burner drivers as well as a 19 degree hybrid and either callaway satin wedges or cleveland gun metal wedges…..Thats all I would change. Nice set.
