Question
so I’m entering 9th grade this year and will be trying out for golf. I hit a 5 iron about 150yds fairly accurate with a 20yd radius of where I aim and I can hit my 9 iron about 100 yards and my 3 iron about 180yds to give you an idea of what I shoot. I never hook or slice my irons but my driving sometimes likes to curve either direction… I score about 90-100 80′s on a good day but I really started up this summer so I’d say I’m doing pretty well. by the way I’m 14. I always go out during the day and just practice my swing on a swing practice mabob
but I stay confident with every shot even if its in the woods I dont cry or throw my clubs I just go with it and think of my plan walking to it. I’m a good sport I dont bad mouth any other players and I have learned most of what I need to know for example : furthest ball goes first, 2 strokes if you ask what the opponent is using, its 2 strokes to pull it out of a hazard or 1 to drop it where you arem etc. I just want to know any coaches ideas of me. would you take me in the team or say forget about you? and I’m not playing with a $ 40 set I’m using taylor made highloft burners $ 500, taylor made hybrid $ 200, and a taylor made r11 $ 400. so I’m not screwing around and yes. I am aware of how to use these clubs in every situation and how to position myself for each shot. so be straightforward on what you think of me. and what would you do for tryouts? 9 holes? drills? anything? Thanks so much!

LOL @ first poster.
You sound like a very knowledgeable kid and you know what you’re doing and you’re dedicated to the game. Your scores need to improve, but as long as you keep working at your golf game I don’t think you’ll have any issues getting better. As for whether you make the golf team or not…I have no idea. I don’t know how good other kids are, so I really can’t say.
Just keep working really hard and never get upset, just keep your head up and try your best at everything!

I’m in your same shoes…kinda seems scary, trying not to make a fool of your self in frontt of the upper class men…you will have things running through your head, just try to eliminate them and think hey… I am hitting my clubs the best I can..and I land in the FW while the other kids are trying to crush em’ 300yds and will probably end up in the woods and you’ll pass them on you second shot, and they will have to take a drop and be on their third stroke. You may also want to go on titleist.com and do the online fitter so that they can get a reference on what ball may help you a bit. You may even want to get a pro and have him help you maybe increase you distance of the ball and aide in your knowledge of the game… I got one and I’m only 5’2″ and I hit my PW about 100yds…driver 200… 5hybrid 150ish (not to sure) and so on…I play Top Flites..but I had to have an inch cut off because I’m a midget, but It doesn’t stop me. So maybe try a pro and titlesit.com to help you. These are just my ideas…also you may want to fill a bucket with water and use your wedges and try to flop them close or even into the bucket to help your short game out…as the saying goes “You drive for show, you putt for dough”…these are some of the things I practice to help myself..also hit the range a lot and try to get out on the course…do not over work your self because you don’t want to be injured or sore going into the try outs…hope this helps.

I’d hit the range. That’s where all the work is done.
