fairway woods in bunker?
Question
last round i used a fairway wood in bunker but i didn’t hit it good. Should you hit fairway woods/hybrids out of bunker and technique on how to if possible
Answered by Jaidan
it will be very hard to use a fairway wood out of the bunker. If you fall in a bunker far away from the green, use a longer iron (3, 4, 5) or use a hybrid.
If you are close to the green, use a wedge, preferably a sand wedge.
Answered by Dark Blue Knight
It all depends on the club head size, I have a Callaway fairway 3 wood and I have used and hit far. The club head is very small. I didn’t have that 3 wood I would have gone my the hybrids preferably a 5!
Answered by TB
It all depends on if you can get the ball up quickly enough to get the ball out and to the target. If you cannot with fairway woods/hybrids then go with a mid iron (6-8) to just get the ball out and down course.

It all depends on the lie. I’ve never used a 3 wood out of a bunker unless I had a perfect lie and had enough room to get the ball airborne. It’s a little easier if the sand is wet or in some cases, hardpan (little sand).

If you hit a 5 wood or a hybrid out remember this:

1. Since you are digging your feet in to get some footing, ALSO choke up on the club. My friends make this mistake all the time and hit it fat.

2. In a fairway bunker, treat your shot like any other club, meaning, make contact with the ball first. This is different if you are in a green side bunker as the club will never actually touch the ball.

It’s perfectly fine to use a fairway wood to hit your ball out out of the bunker. Woods are designed to launch your ball up and out. You want to hit the ball at the bottom of the swing (in the case of fairway woods) as opposed to the upswing (in the case of the driver).
Question
I am playing well at the moment and long game has always been my strongest part but the fairway wood isnt going correctly. The height I’m getting on it isnt enough. I can hit driver correctly, leaning back and hitting it on the upswing, and irons hitting down to take a divot, but what do i do with a 3 wood or 5 wood? and what do I do at set up, it is normal or do i lean back like i do with a driver?
Answered by idez9
Well first of all you should not be “leaning back” in any swing. You should be transferring your weight each and everytime but in different ratios. Hitting fairway woods is the same swing as with your driver except play the ball back just a bit in your stance….let the loft of the club take care of the ball flight…..Some people fear hitting a “wood” into the ground….you should be taking a divot even with a wood off the ground…just barley leaving the roots..very shallow. Try making your turns more with your shoulders and not your hands…making a long arc path…..It is a lot harder to do with today’s enormous driver heads but back a few years ago it wasn’t unheard of hitting your driver “off the deck” when faced with 250 + yrd second shot on a par 5……

You should be basically making the same golf swing with every club. The adjustments from club to club are stance and ball position. The ball position, not the swing will dictate if you hit the ball on the downswing or upswing. Play the ball forward but not as forward as a driver and just make your best swing.
Answered by Sailorman07
if you hitting your driver well, keep the same swing you may have to adjust your stance slightly closer to the ball than the driver or back a little play with it, some times the tee make us change our swing a little since the ball is higher up off the tee, practice at the range. try getting under the ball with your irons you might be better off using them with more ball control.

there is some good video trainings online google the fairway wood video training for tips to see.

hope this helps.

1 dontlean back 2 the ball in the middle of youre chest your hands in line with your belt buckle dont try to hit the ball swing like it is teed up just like your driver
Answered by googie
One uses the same technique with the fairway woods as one would with the long irons. A very shallow divot is all that is required since the object of the shot is distance. You want as little divot as possible to reduce the resistance against the club head. The ball placement is a bit more toward the middle of your stance than that of the driver. There is no leaning, just the position of the normal swing.
Question
What Flex should i get?
What Shaft should i Get?
Answered by googie
Depending on your swing speed a regular flex shafted 3 wood or 5 wood if you haven’t played golf . The clubs are lofted, easier to get the ball air borne and give one a sense of accomplishment when a ball is in flight.. Drivers with 12.5 degree loft would probably be the next purchase. The club should result in longer golf shots than those hit with either the 3 or 5 woods.

You can- there are never any hard and fast rules about club selection in different situations. Seve Ballesteros, the Spanish wizard, was an expert at using a 3 iron out of greenside bunkers. Tiger Woods chips with a 4 iron when he’s just off the fringe.

A good idea is to take enough club to clear the lip of the bunker- whether that’s 5 wood, or a 7 iron, whatever, if you know you can clear the lip with solid contact, go for it.

If you want to use a FW (or hybrid, or long iron) out of a fairway bunker, dig your feet into the sand about 1″. Grip down closer to the shaft as much as you dig in to the sand- if you leave the club longer, you’ll have consistency issues- the shortened shaft matches your shorter stance. Make a three-quarter backswing and follow through. Swing it steady- don’t lose your balance, or it’ll be game over for that shot.

  2. Shawn says:

Hopefully your are not leaning back on your driver, that will only reduce your swing speed and effect the contact with the ball. For hitting fairway woods you should think of sweeping the ball off the turf. Try using a back swing that is taken back low to the ground, keep it as low as long as you can. This action should promote a sweeping action on the down swing. For practice , place a golf ball 20 inches directly behind the ball you are going to hit. In the back swing try to push the “back” ball out of the way, then continue the rest of your swing. Keep the sweeping motion in your mind, do not chop down, do not lean back, allow the loft of the club and sweeping action to get the ball in the air.
