Question
what are they used for and what do the numbers mean. i bought a bounch for 1.00 each at a yard sale
Answered by just browsin
They are for getting the ball down the fairway. The higher the number, the LESS further the ball will go (higher the loft). These are different from woods in that those go long and far but not so high. A 9-iron gets you about 110 to 120 yards for a good full swing.
Answered by Abrams Tanker
Irons are used like any other club. The higher the number, the higher the arc and less distance you will get. They are usually numbers 1-9 with a PW(pitching wedge) or a SW(sand wedge). Depending on the distance of the shot, wind speed and direction, and the lie of the ball determines with club you will use.
Answered by Taylor29
I thought irons were another name for golf clubs…to hit the balls with. The different numbers on each club tells you the best club to use in a bunker, etc….are you serious?
Answered by Davval, PKWE
the lower the iron, such as 9 iron, is when ur closer to the hole.
3 irons and 2 irons are used from farther away, because of their loft. pitching wedges and sand wedges are usually for really close. and sometimes 7 irons are used to lay up on the green from the fringe.

Question
I saw a 2 iron for sale at a retail location and the pro couldn’t tell me. Is it to change the swing weight, or to create a cavity back?
Answered by Flatstick
Well it would reduce the weight in the toe, which would effectively increase the weight in the heel, which would theoretically allow you to draw the ball more. Probably someone couldn’t hit the 2 iron straight so they thought they would modify it. I have heard a lot of tricks over the years (sand down the shaft, lead tape added, rusty face etc) and never heard of anyone drilling holes in the toe of a club. Not sure it would be legal either.
Answered by Julia W
I am not a golfer besides put-put and I sometimes go to the driving range but I’m guessing it is so it weighs less and/or the air can go through it instead of around it. That is my guess. I also say if the pro couldn’t tell I’m guessing he/she wasn’t a pro.
Answered by Martkal44
I will take weight off the toe, and you will be able to give the ball a draw since when you swing you are going to roll the club over more because there is more weight on the heel.

I am not sure that it is legal though, but it may well be.

Answered by wbaker777
I am befuddled…..I’ve been around golf for ages and never seen anything like that…….It could modify swing weight, It could take weight out of the toe to promote more of a draw….It would not have an affect similar to a cavity back….you will probably never know for sure why it was done unless you can find the person that did it.
Question
I am completely new to golf having only played a few times and have seen some golf clubs for sale.

CALAWAY BIG BERTHER IRON SET 3-SW

IRONS, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ,9 + P + SW AND PUTTER

However i think these are the X-12 series? I know they are the 1996 model but have never been used they are imaculate.

I have been told they want £300 for them which to me seems a bit steep considering you can pick up a new set for not much more than that.

So are they worth this much in mint condition????
dont want to see myself getting ripped off.

thanx

Answered by kevin
I really don’t think they are….

Like you said you can get a NEW set for just a bit more, and have better material in your clubs..

Answered by mordo k
not so great
Answered by Mark and Vanessa R
Not good at all you could get a set of Mizuno MX100 custom fitted for you for less than that.
Answered by Robert
whats that about US$ 500.00 thats about what they cost used. so if it works get it.
Answered by ET Training Systems
No, I would talk him down to $ 50, and that only if they are truly in mint condition. These clubs are 14 years old, they should be trying to give them away. Technology has changed. You are doing them a favor.
Question
irons in particular. where can I get the best (i.e. cheapest) deal?

a) big box golf store
c) local pro shop
b) online blowout sale (e.g. golfsmith.com)
d) ebay

Answered by K.R.
you will never find “cheap” ping clubs…

a local pro shop is the way to go though…

if you do ever find cheap ping clubs ask for the serial number so you know that they are authentic.
Ping doesn’t like to discount their product at all, they want their name to be prestigious and not seem like a discount company, know what I mean?

Local Pro shop because to do it properly you need to get fitted.

Good Luck.

Answered by Jon
No No EBAY is the way to go!!!! i love ebay, if you know what you want you can get it for so much cheaper on ebay!! i bought my Sasquatch sumo irons off ebay for 175 dollars!! Brand new and sealed!!! Now if i went to the “pro shop” they would have costed well over 500 probably
Answered by j c
the best way is to find a deal online, then show the website to golfsmith and they will price match it. some online retail stores have them at discounted prices. i saved $ 100 from my G5 set two years ago doing this.
Answered by Drive for show
Go to a golf pro and get fitted. Then you can compare prices against this site. http://valueguide.pga.com/
Question
I am currently playing a set of MaxFli irons manufactured more than 10 years ago. It is made with graphite shaft. I am hitting about 170 with my 5 iron. Today I went down to the golf store and tested some new clubs; interestingly I am hitting my 5 irons about 200 yards and 6 irons about 190 yards into the simulator. When I asked the same question, the sales person told me that simulator might not be all that accurate due to extra rolling of the ball.

My question is: do newly manufactured clubs beat old clubs in the distance department?

Answered by Chris C
Yeah! There shaped differently… But i mean power is power, and how you make contact with the ball will also help your distance obviously. But the newer clubs are made differently, then clubs from 10 years ago… the shape and the weight is different on these new clubs.
Answered by RBK
Not for irons. Newer irons just have better balance thus good tempo for your swing. Thus better Accuracy. I would still use those Wilson Blade irons from the Tin Cup movie and still the same distance from todays irons.

However, for driver. Because of the bigger clubface and Moment of Inertia (MOI), you can hit at least 15 yards farther than a 10 year old driver. Those Nike Sumo driver are just far even for a newbie who never played on the golf course.

Answered by revjohnfmcfuddpucker
Sorry, gentlemen, but the Element 21 Golf Irons (and driver, and woods) kicked the living crap out of every club known to man on every simulator. They have just now crept into the PGA. The latest is Boo Weekley.
Answered by toughnottobeacynic
Be aware that the lofts on the irons today are a lesser loft that the same irons of ten years ago. So even though the number on the sole may be the same, the irons of today have a lesser loft, so naturally the ball will go farther. It’s merely a marketing gimmick because everyone wants to hit it farther. I will say that the biggest improvement is in the shaft because of the new materials available that provide a more repeatable swing.
Answered by Vegas Matt
Some do, some do not, it depends on the manufacturer and style of club. A new set of blade clubs isn’t go to be much different than a set from 20 years ago because they’re meant to be accurate, not far. But a set of game improvement clubs designed for golfers that don’t get much distance may go a lot further than an older set. Like someone else said, a lot have manufacturers are using less loft than they used to, and graphite shafts are quite a bit better than they were 10 years ago, which could add some distance.

Anyway, don’t trust the simulators. The distances they say probably have a 30 yard margin of error. If the only place you can test out the clubs is on a simulator, try them side by side with your old clubs. If you can find somewhere that sells clubs and has an actual range you can test them on, that would be much better.

    hitting the ball

  2. Mighty Mouse says:

Irons are for shorter and more controlled shots. Woods are for driving distance.

  3. sobdevilman says:

Each iron is made to hit the ball a certain distance, and send it in a specific arc.The slant of the face of each iron increases as the numbers increase;for example, the 5 iron is sloped at a greater angle than a 3 iron, a 7 will have more than the 5,etc.The angle of the face will give more loft to the ball(7,8,9-high loft,4,5,6-medium loft,1,2,3-low loft). Remember, the higher the loft, the less linear distance the ball will travel.

  4. kzd2k says:

they are used to hit golf balls……

  5. FrogDog says:

Irons are numbered consecutively but the numbers have no other meaning. Irons are used for distances from 230 yds in to the green. The smaller the number the greater the distance and the lower the trajectory. Generally they are numbered from 1 Iron through 9 Iron with PW = Pitching Wedge, SW = Sand Wedge, and others called lob wedges.

  6. Daniel L says:

Well, I have seen new beginner sets that have all the clubs you need, including driver and fairway wood for about $ 125. The big bertha set is weighted and balanced better than a beginner’s set. If you are just starting out you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I personally would recommend buying a starter set for cheap, until you learn how to play and get more into the game, then get a more expensive set.

  7. kegger says:

RIP OFF don’t do it that seems way to fricken high 300 pounds seem High Im from Canada but dude that’s a rip off 300 pounds is about $ 800 Canadian That will buy you last years brand new iron set from a store and I bet they throw in something to sweeten the deal if you ask like a glove ,tees and balls towel ball marker or all of the above Look to buy a year or two old clubs or for a even better deal look for a demo sale

  8. Leafsfan29 is on the 1st tee says:

Ping operates slightly differently in that they set minimum pricing for their product (if you want to be a Ping retailer, you agree to these terms), so that $ 699 set of irons will be $ 699 anywhere you go.

If you buy on ebay…be very wary of fakes.

If it’s a blowout or “reduced” price, it’s because it’s a discontinued model.

Because of Ping’s colour-coding, you’re strongly encouraged to get fitted. Clubs are expensive; you might as well buy ones that are fitted.

  10. Martkal44 says:

    Custom Fitting!!!!!!!

Not Ebay, nowadays it is too easy to make fakes….plus I think if you buy direct from Ping they make you get fitted because they are expensive and don’t want people complaining that the clubs are crap.

….oh and Mizuno are the best quality irons. Just look how well their forged clubs are.

Watch the video underneath the sound test.

I know I might be coming from a biased view as I have just been custom fitted from Mizuno at a national fitting centre……but trust me, you will not regret the move.

Plus it only cost me £455 for 3-pw and I was given a 56 and 60 degree wedge for free worth £60-90 each!…….not to mention the fact I got multi-compound grips fitted free unlike the standard grips.
