I would take the driver back or sell it on ebay, then buy what you want.
I just remembered: you could remove the head and put a lead/tungsten tip pin (heavier than 10g) in the shaft tip and reattach the head (or have a club fitter do this if you aren’t feeling confident). You could also remove the grip and put lead/tungsten powder down the shaft (again, more than 10g); from there, put a cork in the shaft and force it down as far as it can go with a 48″ ramrod. After that, just put a new grip on. These two tactics have the same effect as lead tape and looks unsightly. I want to say that it can be done yourself, but I strongly advise consulting with a club fitter on this one.

Also if I get set 1 I won’t have to take out any clubs when I play matches but with set 2, I would have to take out 1 club for matches because only 14 clubs are allowed. Please consider that in set 1 there is an amazing sand wedge that is not in set 2. Also consider that set 2 has 4 hybrids while set 1 has an approach wedge, iron 2, and iron 3.
If you have any other suggestions I’ll be happy if you post them. Thanks!
Another thing, I won’t worry about price as long as it’s not super crazy high.
Also, can you suggest a great set of 14 clubs that are very good? I’m not sure that the amount of clubs in the Taylor Made r9 tp’s are correct.
I currently am playing a 4-pw set of cobra s9 irons. these are considered a super game improvement iron and was a good choice for me when I bought them back in 2007. They have improved my game immensely.
I now shoot in the low to mid 80′s and am on the verge of breaking 80 consistently with some honed wedge play and focusing more on reading and putting better. My driver is probably my best club. I did get my swing speed measured at a small local shop at +105 consistently with some up around 115 if I really cut at it which doesn’t suit me and I rarely do on course.
I consider the best part of my swing is a smooth tempo, I haven’t really taped myself but I do get a few comments from friends and people I don’t know that I have a nice smooth swing which produces more distance than it looks like it should. i strive to and play my best when I focus on a nice smooth tempo.
I’m at the point with my game that I want the option to work the ball, not all the time, but if a green or particular shot calls for a bit of working from left to right or high or low.
I’m also playing the best golf of my life right now and don’t want to mess that up to much, I know I’ll need a good few rounds to adjust to a new set of irons but I am willing to put that time in and hope that a new set will tune my game to shoot lower but still have fun. I think my game is there. just need a new set of tools.
Well, I have new wedges which with more play i feel I’ll hone in some great touch around the greens, new putter which is working for me better than ever and my driver and 3 hybrid I wouldn’t part with for pretty much anything, I’d even consider a 4 hybrid for some rounds, so all that is left is my irons.
I want to get away from my super game improvers with their wide soles and huge offset, and unfortunately where I live there is no large golf shops that let you demo a set so I’m stuck reading reviews and sites like this to ask.
As of right now the r9 or r9tps really catch my eye, never really liked callaways but the razrx and tours do look promising. I’m also considering the burner 2.0′s but with not being able to hit them this is a gut shot. Well all comments would be great, Even some other options to look at.
They are perfect for you and you can use them when you get a lot better too
This is a PDF file of Ralph Maltby’s Iron Head Playability Factor for 2011. Very insightful. It measures stuff like vertical center of gravity, head weight, MOI to give each club (well, 6i) its own value. Each club within a set parameter will basically play the same. My own limited testing and others have shown that this is pretty d@mn accurate.
Here’s a listing, if you aren’t inclined to look:
Callaway:
RAZR- 970 MPF (Ultra Game Improvement)
RAZR Tour- 699 MPF (Game Improvement)
Taylormade:
Burner 2.0- 607 MPF (Game Improvement)
r9- 97 MPF (Player Classic)
r9TP- 218 MPF (Player Classic)
And for fun…
Cobra S9: 860 MPF (Ultra Game Improvement)
The set I currently have is a set of Ram “Wizards” I believe.
I don’t want to go crazy, but I see that I can get some seemingly decent used Callaway clubs for around 300-400 bucks. I would really like to be in the 300-400 price range. Lastly, I don’t need a driver right now. My shots with my Irons are all (90% of the time lol) straight and pretty good, I just need to work on distance and hill shots.
I say I don’t need a driver right now because I have a very, very weird issue to work out. With my driver, I have a problem where I came down on the ball, and sometimes smack the bottom of the club, on top of the ball. That problem has diminished recently, and I haven’t done it in a while. But I still have a pretty bad slice with my big driver. (Normally I just aim left so it offsets my slice, ha). Anyway, I don’t want to buy a nice driver and then, well….break it.
Any info/recommendations on a set of irons would be great!!!
There are SO many good choices on eBay. You also try checking in-store at your local golf retailers because they usually have new sets for a decent price. What brand are you looking for? Steel or graphite shaft? If you don’t mind editing your question to being more specific, I can try to help you out, but here’s a good buy if you’re interested: http://cgi.ebay.ca/TAYLORMADE-BURNER-PLUS-IRON-SET-4-PW-AW-STEEL-SHAFT-/360367964687?pt=Golf_Clubs&hash=item53e79ac20f
You’re going to want to get fitted. Not every manufacturer makes their lie angles, swing weights (head heft) and club lengths (or lofts, for that matter) the same, that’s why you should take your old clubs with you, so the fitter can analyze them. S/He can find out the specs of your current irons, so the new set can be built to these specs. Getting straight down is the hardest part; distance is relatively easy. When you learn to “let go” and swing the club faster, the distance will come.
Examples of Clubs:
Callaway “X” series (not the “tour”, the “regular”); Cleveland CG series; Adams A3/A7; Hireko Acer XK/XF, PowerPlay System Q, Caiman; Ping G or Rapture series; Matlby’s CER or KE4 series; Swing Science 200 or 800 series; Nike CCI or Vr Cavity; Taylormade Burner or Tour Preferred. There’s many more- do your due dilligence before making a final decision.
As for hilly lies, angle your shoulders in line with the slope. If it’s down hill, point your left shoulder (assuming you’re RH here) down the slope, do the opposite for an uphill lie. Make sure your base is solid and swing along the slope.
If the ball is below your feet, squat a little more in your stance (do it with the hips and thighs, not by rounding the back) and again, solidify the base. Expect the ball to fade/slice, so aim accordingly. For a ball above your feet, you’re going to make a swing that’s more baseball-like (upright), so expect the ball to draw/hook. It gets easier the more you practice it.

Set one has three useless clubs in the bag. A 2 and 3 iron, ya right how often do you hit those? 64 degree wedge hmmm… only thing thats good for is a snake killer.Take a couple of the hybrids and put em’ in bag one.
There are a number of sites online where you can find what you’re looking for. I’ve bought the majority of my equipment on ebay. All authentic and in excellent condition. Also, there are sites that have pre-owned equipment such as tgw.com. edwinwatts.com, and golfsmith.com along with new equipment. Check out these sites as well:
rockbottomgolf.com
3ballsgolf.com
gppgolf.com
i love playing golf which is good for health, so i share with you for golf online store.

I would not recommend going with used clubs – you can get new clubs that are great very easily in the 300-400 price range.
I would recommend going to a golf shop and hitting a few of the different options and find out which clubs you hit best. Each manufacturer makes their clubs a little different and which one you hit best may very greatly from your friends or anyone giving advice here.
If you want to save money, go to Rockbottomgolf.com – you can spend around $ 200 and get a great set of irons that is brand new. They will be a model that is 1-2 years old, but that doesn’t matter much at all. That way you can then spend $ 100 and buy the Taylormade 2009 burner driver for $ 120.
I know you don’t want to buy a driver, but the slice problem could be exacerbated by your club. My slice was horrible until I purchased a new driver (the Taylormade mentioned above), and I immediately fixed my slice afterwards – cutting a good 10 strokes off my game immediately.
Hope this helps, good luck!
