Answered by jess-AYY
You can do that…..If they wouldn’t mind. Because they may want to spend time with their family on Christmas

Question
Ok, so I want to give gifts to a few of my friends. I hate how Christmas has become so commercial though. I don’t want to spend a whole bunch of money and I don’t want to give them something they’re never going to use. Preferablly making something handmade. Any ideas? I’m stuck…

make a scrapbook with photos. make sure you have pictures of special events. write a note telling them how special they are to you.
buy all of their favorite things and put it in a big gift basket make sure you include their favorite candy, movie, CD, band poster, pictures of you, book, something from their favorite restaurant, food, lyrics from their favorite song, poem,…(you can also put these things or pictures of them in the scrapbook)
if you know how make someone a cute small lap quilt.. i made all my friends one that was different and went with what they are into (patterns) they are real easy and quick and seem like thay took forever and really useful and everyone loved them…

Get them some candy and a puzzle book and maybe a nice pen and put it in a gift bag.

Simple as that!

sometimes giving is more important than receiving gifts. Cause you know what you like or what you need and to receive a gift that you don’t like it pretty awful

Question
I am going to Ho Chi Minh City to meet a Vietnamese girl that my friend introduced me to. I will meet her family and understand that it is a custom to give gifts when meeting them. The problem is the traditional gifts for the men (alcohol and tobacco) won’t work in this situation as the family doesn’t drink or smoke.

Any suggestions on gifts that I could give to the parents (both her mom and dad) and maybe her grandmother?

You know what, It seems that everything a person brings home from the US, is always something new to them. They like it all. If you are a smoker/drinker then you probably expect them the same. But no, cigarettes and alcohol are not ways the 2 items men like. Be honest and ask the woman you are seeing what her parents like so you can buy the right stuff. If you want to surprise them then maybe something to consider such as cologne, ties, or even foods. Seriously, they love foods, especially meat, ham stuff. They taste much better than anything available in VN.
Last but not least is “money” lol. Nobody says no to it. But I would stay away because it makes them feel being bought!

I wouldn’t stress too much about it OR spend too much money.

Buy something local from your hometown. Even though they aren’t drinkers you can still take them a bottle of wine or some chocolates. Or try looking in a bookstore for a local or American coffee table book…

GOOD CHOCOLATE, it’s the equivalent of a bottle of booze and a carton of smokes! lol
BTW, I know a lot of Viets. I know men who don’t drink alcohol, I know men who don’t smoke cigarettes. I even know men who do neither,,,Those guys usually wear yellow robes and burn incense, lol, They don’t usually have children!
I do have a friend who does neither but he’s nguoi Uc, khong Viet.

1. For the Dad: Some tins of good Chinese tea such as Oolong. You can order these on Amazon.com (small box : $ 18. Large Box: $ 43).

2. For the Mom: A bottle of Chanel No. 5 Perfume (about $ 100). If that’s too much for you, find cheaper brands. Local department stores.

3. For the Grandmother: Jewelry Case. From LL Bean. For about $ 22.

Question
Im a freshman, and my city is so large we have two high schools, 9-10th grade and 11-12th grade. For my northwinds band class, all of the sophomores are leaving to the other campus, and I really need some awesome ideas for gifts to them. I prefer individual gifts :) please help!
Answered by LaLa
I would give them something that related to the instrument that they play. But nothing too over the top. just simple little things. That are personal. Its hard to come up with ideas without knowing the band or what kind of stuff they are into. good luck and don’t over think it.

I used to. Until I found out it far better to give than recieve. Accept someone’s gift with great appreciation, they will reap what they sow in due time. As far as the awkwardness as to whose present is craperer, don’t sweat it…chill. You will do better next time. After all, it’s the old saying….It’s the thought that counts.
