Once a player finds the clubs he likes, is comfortable with and has decent results they are in his possession for several years. Retaining a driver is no different. In 70 years of purchasing clubs I have had 5 sets of woods with 2 extra drivers. Two of these sets went on to our sons as did the extra drivers. Most golfers will keep their clubs for 10 years on average before they purchase new. Often the purchase is age related for more flexible shafts and lighter weights.
Question
I only go to the driving range and trying to get maximum distance. Which is better stiff or flex. Can someone explain the difference? I’m kind of an beginner, with my friend’s cleveland launcher I can only hit under 300 yards.

A good amateur golfer is doing well to hit the ball about 240 yards off the tee. It’s far more important to put the ball in the fairway. Remember, “Drive for show, putt for dough.”

I’m not too sure what you’re asking here. But I can tell you if you’re seeking max distance you will most likely get more distance with regular shaft.
The reason is the shaft is able to ‘load’ on the downswing and ‘unload’ into the ball…
You can think of it like cracking a whip….you can’t crack a whip with a steel pipe, and it’s very difficult to load a shaft that has a flex that is too stiff for your swingspeed.
So in conclusion, for max distance, get the regular flex shaft.

ok, well stiff is the flex, I believe it goes senior, regular , stiff and extra stiff. But the botttom line is your average swing speed should dictate the stiffness of the club shaft, 80-95mph is regular flex, 95-110 is stiff 110 and over is extra stiff, my miles per hour maybe off slightly but that is the basics of your answer, have your swing speed checked

Go to a golf shop with a launch monitor. They will let you hit some balls, and determine the right shaft and driver combination for you. Nobody online can tell you what flex shaft you need.

I have the taylormade r5 with the draw bias and it really helped out my slice. I would highly recommend it. If he gets good distance with his current driver I would recommend a fairly high loft (12 or higher) to help decrease side spin and keep the ball going straighter.

all clubs should be fit for the individual person. just because john daly or tiger woods hits a certain driver long doesn’t mean your bf can hit the same club.
the best gift would be going to a pro shop (at a local course) and get him a gift certificate for a driver and a fitting.

I recommend any Taylor Made driver. You can buy the latest and greatest and he would be thrilled or a slightly older, but never used model at discount places like Costco…very cheap that way.

I have not bought one for 5 years but decided to buy a new Callaway today.
The latest was given to me in September. Usually each fall there is a new one in my bag.
I buy a new driver every 3 years. Currently in the market, but they keep coming out with new features and models. Hard to pull the trigger.

What i would do is go to the local golf shop and ask him if they have custom fitting. Most will. If they do, make an appointment and give him a card saying “I have made an appointment for you to get at new drive at ……..time”

You have to like how it looks, the sounds it makes as it hits the ball, how it feels, and how it responds to your hands. You should sneakily try to find out which one he prefers. The next time you talk about it, ask him if he thinks a different driver would help and which one he likes the best. Also, the stiffness, length, and type of shaft matters along with the loft of the clubhead.
TaylorMade, Titleist, Ping, Nike, Cleveland, and many other companies make what are considered forgiving drivers with clubhead sizes in the 450cc range. Not all golfers like clubheads that big.
4 years ago, for my birthday, my girlfriend stuck me in the car and took me to the golf shop where I was able to try out many fairway woods and select the two that I wanted. She then took me directly to the driving range and sat patiently watching while I hit a bucket of balls. She had also arranged a tee time for me the next morning. Every time I play golf, I think about what she did for me and tell my playing partners who are envious. This has a lot to do with her longevity and I have yet, in my mind, to do something as important for her but, I keep trying.
