Question
I want to have a golf club headcover made for my driver that looks like me. Similar to what Ian Puolter has.
Answered by engage
Can we start with your background and what brought you to Club Car?

First of all, I’ve been in the golf industry since 1979. I worked with E-Z-GO from 1979 to ‘94, mostly in a financial capacity. I left E-Z-GO in 1994 when I was named president of Textron Turf Care, which was then known as Jacobson Textron. I left Textron in 2000 after 25 years with the company.

My wife and I had some property in Charleston, and we decided to relocate and build a house there. I kept myself busy by getting involved with the boards of a couple of companies and brokering for Textron Financial’s Golf Division . Then, lo and behold, I got a phone call from Mont Miller, who was then CEO of Club Car. He wanted to know if I was interested in being CEO of Club Car. The common thread through all those years has been Herb Henkel, who was president of Textron before becoming Chairman of Ingersoll-Rand. So I had worked with him when I was with Jacobsen and E-Z-GO.

So you were already known up and down the line?

Yes. I had also known the President and Chairman of Ingersoll-Rand for a number of years.

What events or accomplishments were noteworthy while you were with Jacobsen/Textron?

We completely revamped the product line and successfully completed a number of acquisitions, including Bunton and Ransomes, which proved to be very strategic to the company’s growth.

What is your title now?

President and CEO

Is Mr. Henkel still President of IR?

He is Chairman, President and CEO of Ingersoll-Rand, which is a $ 9 billion corporation.

How does that company compare with Textron?

In terms of revenues, I’d say the two are comparable.

Did IR give you any specific goals or objectives that they would like to see or did they leave that largely in your hands?

IR wants to double the size by the year 2005.

IR itself, not Club Car?

No, the expectation is that each business unit would double.

Now that’s a rather healthy objective. Did they mention that to you before you took the job?

No, as a matter of fact they did not.

What surprises were here when you came? The biggest surprise?

I guess the biggest surprise – remember now, I spent 15 years competing against Club Car – I guess the biggest surprise was how well received I was by the people at Club Car. The welcome that I got from our associates, from customers, from distributors was amazing. I had a preconceived idea that they were not going to be happy with me coming in, but to their credit – and my delight – I was wrong.

Because of an E-Z-GO and Textron background?

Sure.

Of course there is not a lot of trading back and forth between Club Car and E-Z-GO.

Actually, I guess there was some trading back and forth on an engineering level and a few sales positions, but not much else. And I guess the one thing that I failed to consider was the fact that I hadn’t worked for E-Z-GO directly for about 6 or 7 years, and a lot of people I knew and competed against in Club Car had retired. All in all, there were a lot more new faces than I had anticipated.

Was the caliber of people as high as you had expected?

Higher! It’s the highest quality organization I have ever seen.

Received the Golf Tour Z5 set today & having tried them, I am really pleased & wish to compliment you for producing such great value clubs:

Great clubs – The clubs played better than the genuine ones; unbelieviable, but true !
Great price – The price is incredible – almost a third of the price of G5s!
Great service- As the shaft I ordered was not available, I was automatically given an upgraded version !

All in all, very pleased !

Just a note to say that I am very pleased with my XL8 irons which you fitted with the lightweight stepless steel shafts and delivered within four days.
Custom built to fit my height , I find them very easy to hit and reliably straight. I have gained a good ten yards and, coincidence or perhaps new confidence, I cut five strokes three games on the trot.
I am really glad I didn’t pay well over double for the big name, because I can’t believe they could be any better.

The utility club arrived on 8th Sept. Thank you very much for the prompt service.
I have played a few shots with it and I’m quite impressed.

I used my new T9000 utilities today and yesterday and found them excellent, very easy to hit with consistent direction.

They look superb – compared them to a friend’s Taylor Made dual utility and they seem virtually identical. I kept the weights neutral, which seems to produce a nice draw. I yet may experiment with a heavier weight in the toe but having said that, playing a fade was not difficult. Your custom fitting service was a real bonus as I am 6′ 4″ and standard clubs are too short. I also liked having a choice of grip.

I cannot understand why anyone would fork out £140 each for the Tailor Made dual utilities on which mine are based, or indeed any other heavily marketed brand, especially as they are not even custom fitted. Maybe they have a magic ingredient (snob value?), but I can’t imagine what could improve on your clubs. Nick – Argyll

I received excellent service from start to finish with UK Custom Golf. From the initial email noting my interest through the fitting, the collection and finally the first game with the new clubs! I played for the first time with the clubs (XL-8 irons, T-9000 woods + utility and a two ball putter with steel insert) and I must say they were excellent. They gave a very positive feel and I’ve been assured that they feel just like the branded counterparts by owners of the branded counterparts! I have since recommended UK custom Golf to other people who will hopefully be able to enjoy the same level of service and quality of clubs as I have. I will definitely be returning to UK Custom Golf when it’s time for replacements but judging by the quality of the product could be a long time!

Thanks again

Hi everyone at Uk Custom Golf,

I would like this opportunity to thank you for your fantastic service and for the quality of your golf irons. I bought from you the XP6 Irons for my Husband about six weeks ago. They were delivered as promised on time and very securely packaged. My Husband has been using Callaway tungsten titanium oversized irons for 7 years which cost him at the time about £1,200. He said that these Irons that you custom fit for him are amazing value and to play with they feel so much nicer than the Callaway’s. My Brother and Friends are so impressed with them that they are thinking about buying a set each off you. Thank you once again amazing set of Irons.

Yours sincerely,

J Hardiman. Hereford.

Thank you, my new clubs arrived safe and sound – very exciting ! I took them out and had a round (of golf as well as beers) and they are brilliant. I’m very pleased with them.

They are now resting cosily in their “hats” in my golf bag, after their tiring day !

Question
hello,
i am going to start playing golf for the first time and was wonder whether i should buy a golf club set or get custom fitted. I’ve never played golf, never actually swung a driver, wedge, iron, or putter, so what should i do? thank you!!
Answered by Roger W
well as a newbie to golf you may want to rent to start.if you are serious about the game then i would suggest a 8 piece irons set and a driver.3,5 wood. Also you might want to try hybrid clubs rather than the long irons 3 iron and up as they are easier to hit and have a little more loft to help you get the ball up.if you are serious about the game and play for a while.Fitted clubs are for the serious player as it is not the cheapest option.Good luck!
Answered by unoriginalnamecreator
Club fitting is for everyone and it actually benefits the higher handicaps exponentially more than for lower. If you’ve never even swung though, I would recommend getting a few lessons first using the rental clubs rather than spend any major money just to see if you like the game. Once youve done that, go get a fitting before you purchase any clubs. At many places, the fitting is free with purchase of a set.

No, if u are 5’7″-6″3″, I said you can just use a standard spec. Other than that range u probably want to extend or shorten ur shaft a little bit. As a beginner, u will probably change ur swing everyday. u will be able too tell what spec u want to adjust lie/loft/length/grip size if u keep play. Don’t worry about get fitted, before u have much preference. There are the reasons why club makers called “standard spec”. It suit most people.
Answered by nukki v
As a beginner i would suggest to take a lesson to know the basics like proper stance, grip, and other stuff and if you think you’re really into it i would suggest for you to buy a decent clubs so you’ll get used to it everytime you practice and play as for club fitting as long as you have an average height you dont have since you’re still a beginner maybe in the future when you think you’ve improved and you ready to get a game improvement clubs that’s the time you can get your club custom fit.
Question
I’m a high handicapper (16) looking for a new set of clubs. I am retiring to Myrtle Beach and plan to continue to play. Would having a custom measured set of clubs be worth it for me? I’m a big guy but I hit a driver only about 210 yards, and a 5 iron about 150.

Thanks
Big in the waist. I’m about 6 ft. but about 245 lbs. Unfortunately not much of it is muscle at this point in my life, but I’m working on it.

Answered by kuyales
First and foremost, if you are 16 handicap you are a very good player especially due to your lack of distance across the board of all your clubs. I believe in all cases fitted clubs benefits everyone. If you want to drop your handicap then get your clubs fitted. If and when you get your clubs fitted, your distance on all your clubs will actually go up. And it can be an even more drastic improvement if you find out your shafts are too hard (or soft). So I do recommend fitting your clubs, especially since it seems like you are going to be playing more in your retirement. Totally worth it in my opinion.
Answered by freshwater angler
make sure you get your putter custom fitted for your stroke…… your putter is a big part of how you play each day
Answered by knh959
You describe yourself as a ‘big guy’. How big. If you’re over 6’1 or 6’2 you might benefit from custom fitted clubs. A slightly longer shaft could improve your game. A 16 hcp is a pretty respectable number for anybody.
Question
I am thinking of buying a custom-made one of the drivers above.

I am 14 years old, male, don’t bother the name below my non-existent avatar. But anyways my drives generally go between 195 and 215 yards, and I’m looking for something that will generally get me more distance and control off the tee. I have a 18 handicap if that helps at all.

I am just looking for a recommendation from someone who has tried these drivers and could give me a recommendation based on what I said above about my game play.

And I don’t want any crap on how I’m still growing and shouldn’t spend all that money on a club because I’ll grow out of it soon. I have another driver that I am growing into now, and I just need a club that fits me right now at this point in my life so I am not choking up/down on my drivers.

Thanks for any answers I receive!

Newest Callaway Diablo Edge driver!

The Ping G15 with out a doubt.
Answered by old pro
Since you are going to buy the better of the three drivers look no further than the Ping G15. You will get both the control and distance you are looking for with that beauty. I’ve tried them all and the Ping looked and performed better than the others. The Callaway Edge Tour performed better than the Edge and came close to the Ping performance. I’m sorry but I just can’t get past the look of the Cobra it just doesn’t fit my eye and if you don’t like the look of it you’ll never play well with it. If you can afford to play with good equipment you should. Good luck with the new weapon regardless of what you choose.
Answered by Iain
Hey, we are the same age, have the same handicap and hit around the same distance. I currently use a Nike SQ driver. At a local golf store that I have gone to, I have tried out the Ping G15 driver. I hit it very well. I have heard bad things about the Callaway Diablo edge, and have heard nothing about the Cobra. If price means nothing, I would go with the G15.
