Yes you’re pretty good.
Not a pro but you got great potential if you practice more! Observe your golf game closely and see where you can eliminate at least one shot from every hole you play. Your scores will decrease dramatically.

yes for an average regular golfer you are a bit ahead of the curve. In comparison to the pros who drive regularly 300-340 you have some work to do, but on average your doing pretty good.

I would categorize you as a good golfer. However, I noticed you said NOTHING about your short game. This leads me to believe that you are a younger golfer wondering where you stand on the golf ladder.

Assuming I am correct, you are past halfway. Be careful not to focus only on the long game. As you gain experience and improve your swing, more distance will come naturally. However, as you break into the 70s (which by the way you can easily do with these yardages), what begins to separate the better golfers is the short game. Putting, chipping, and bunker play is where you need to excel. In addition, having a quality short game makes the long game a lot easier.

Question
Looking for a new set of irons, i am going out for the Varsity golf team next year and am looking at changing from a deep cavity iron to a muscle back or blade for more work-ability. Right now i am using a set of steel-head Callaway X-16 4-9 with a Cleveland CG12 52* as my pitching wedge (i have a pitching wedge but the 52* goes the same distance and provides more spin). I was looking at the Mizuno MP-60 irons or the MX-25′s both look great but i just can’t decide… i am a 9.4 handicap whose putting is the only thing screwing up my scores. I want more control of my irons and my callaways have to much of an offset. give me your recommendations for irons that have been made in the past 6 years or so from 2005-2010 and i will look them up… thanks

CG16 as they are a forgiving cavity back that are really accurate. They are around 500-700 bucks which I think is a BARGAIN

You’re looking for game enhancement instaed of game improvement. The MP-60 would be more up your alley than the MX-25. I don’t know your price range, but being u said the last 6 years, I’m guessing less than 400. Other options would be Titleist AP2(the ’08 model), Cobra Pro CB, Mizuno MP-57, and TaylorMade r7 TP.

Question
currently a 15 handicap player. have a set of rac wedges, looking for a change since they are warped from playing too much. i am looking at the cleveland cg12/14. the gel insert is a setback since i am ever so used to blades and the ‘forged’ feel. i have read that the cg14 are better for full shots since they excel at forgiveness. my thoughts for my wedges: a 52 degree cg14 (for full swings, forgiveness if needed) and a 56 degree cg12 (half swings and most chips/pitches around the green). this set up seems kind of odd, but i believe it might work. any thoughts? any help deciding? thanks.

when i had cg wedges, they were considerably shorter than comparable wedges…i hit the cg a little over 10 yards shorter than TM wedges that a friend had. I switched to Titleist Vokey spin milled wedges that are simply amazing, if I were to recommend anything that would be it.

It’s an excellent idea you have, (using the cg12 for chips/pitches and the cg14 for full swings). It’s worked well for me however I use cg11 52 and a 588 56 but the same concept.

I’m an 18 handicap myself and have considered purchasing a cg12 60 for lobbing onto the green (hoping for some backspin) as the 56 I have now (588) I can’t get back spin to save my life! Sucker just keep rolling even though I land right next to the pin! Aaaarrrgh!

The reason for the cg12 consideration is because of the “zip” grooves they promote which is supposed to help with backspin on pitches.

The wedge choices are fine…the reasoning is flawed…… Distance is the determining factor on full wedge shots not loft although loft will limit distance. I hit a 50 degree wedge 105-110. I can hit a 56 degree 100 yds.( if the greens will hold it). I chip (depending on lie) with anything from a 7 iron to a 60 degree wedge.. Oh ……Spin is a result of good ball contact and sharp grooves on your wedge. A good ball will help…..but I can spin a ProV1 and a top flite. its all in the contact. I play to a -1 right now

I like your theory. I recently switched from forged irons (Callaway X-Tour) to cast irons (Taylor R-7), and the new set came with a pitching wedge at 45 degrees and a sand wedge at 55. I bought a forged 50 degree for chipping around the green and for 95 to 100 yard shots. This way I have a club with feel for the little chips and running shots around the green.
