Question
This year I have finally replaced my 3 iron with a hybrid and I love it. The thing is my 5 wood is a 21d lofted club and my 3w is like 18d, I can hit that 3w about 250 and my 3h about 225 I’m looking to replace my 3w with a 15d, estimating I can hit that about 260 then I’m not sure what to do in between if I should get an 18d hybrid or 18d 5w to replace my current 3 and 5.

Please help, I’m wondering if anyone has any expierence with how much farther a wood will go compared to the same degree hybrid. If I replace my 3w it will leave me a gap from 220yds – 255yds and I don’t know what the better solution will be for me.

I know everyones yardages are different I’m not worried so much with how far everyone else hits those clubs as I am how someone will hit a wood compared to a hybrid.

All answers are appreciated I hope that I was clear on my question. do I go 5 wood or 18degree hybrid, I can hit hybrids and fairway woods both consistantly.

Answered by thebasics06
If you can hit both consistantly then you can really go for any of them.

The question is pretty hard to understand with alot of numbers all close together.

So you have swapped your 3 iron for a hybrid (so the hybrid is a 20-21degree, because this is what will replace the 3 iron)

Therefore your hybrid is already playing like your 5wood that you have.

The 18degree hybrid will play like a 5wood/2iron. but will not go as long as you would hit a 5 wood.

So it’s down to you, do you want to be more accuarate and lose alittle distance, then go for the hybrid.

If you want to let it rip and maybe not hit as many fairways then go with the wood.

I hope what I have said will help.

What you’re saying cannot be the case. A 3 wood’s loft is anywhere from 13-16 degrees. A 5 wood’s loft is between 17-19 degrees. You cannot have an 18 degree 3 wood. Since you are loving your hybrid so much, you can get a 2 hybrid to replace your 5 wood and get a 3 wood that is 15 degrees. I wouldn’t be concerned with the distance gap. If you hit it well enough, there won’t be a gap. I have a strong 3 wood that is 13 degrees and a 2 hybrid that is 18 degrees. I have a 15 degree 3 wood also and thought I may get a little more distance with the strong 3 wood. Off the tee I think I may get more distance. The jury is out on whether I get more distance off the deck or not. You won’t hit one style of club farther than another with the same loft.

i had the same problem a few years ago and this solution worked for me. the 3 iron hybrid is a great idea and i would suggest it to anyone. the 15d 3 wood is the best and probably the only fairway wood you will need. a 13d will go further, but with the new larger and more forgiving drivers out there you would probably be better off hitting the driver and a 15d is much easier to hit off the ground. the 13d will go further off the ground, but any time you need more distance than the 15d you’re better off laying up. i would get rid of the 5 wood and replace it instead with an 18d hybrid. it is much easier to hit out of the rough, you won’t have the same problems ballooning it off the tee, its more workable, and its much easier to hit 3/4 hybrid than a 5 wood. i play a 15d 3 wood, an 18d hybrid, and a 3 iron. i’m a scratch golfer and have had very few problems not having the right club for the shot.
Question
I am getting back into golf. I’m not quite a super-beginner though. I got a good deal on some irons and they are composed of a 3 hybrid and 4-PW. I’m starting some lessons and a friend was a college player. They both said concentrate on irons for now (get the swing down), but start thinking about the next club up. I’ve heard people say 2 hybrid and others say 3 wood all the way.

I’m not asking to bring up a hybrid vs wood debate. For a quasi-beginner like me, which one (generally) would you recommend? The 3 hybrid has a loft of 20 deg. I’m seeing how 3 woods today seem harder to fit off grass for beginners. I won’t even touch a driver for a while, so I just need a step up from a 3 hyrbid that I can hit off the tee and play in fairways/rough. Thanks!

Answered by TennisGirl
When I am not hitting my driver well, I hit 5 wood off the tee. I think a 5 wood would be a good next club up, because going from a 3 hybrid to a wood might be too big of a step. Playing in the fairways and light rough the 5 wood would work well. For the rough I would stick to your 3 hybrid and irons though.

It sounds like you are deathly afraid of maybe missing a shot. We all do it from time to time. You need to learn good fundamentals of the golf swing, and when you do that you will be able to hit all the clubs. Go ahead and get a three wood and a driver and work on hitting them. You are not going to learn golf without some struggles along the way, so saying oooh I won’t even try to hit a three wood or a driver is a defeatist attitude. Get out there and play some “smash-ball”.

Sooner or later you will need a wood. The 5 wood will go approximately the same distance as the 3 hybrid so it would not e my first choice. You may want to try a 4 wood, I have a friend that plays one and it fits his yardage gap. I have a 3 wood as the next club in my bag. You may wish to find a wood that has 15 or 16 degrees of loft to fill in your yardage gap and leave room for some wedges on the other end.
Answered by Jason G
The next logical step would be either a 5 wood or 2 hybrid. The lofts are the same for both clubs. It just depends on what you are comfortable with. Both can be hit off the tee.
Answered by Vegas Matt
A 5 wood has pretty much the same loft as your 3 hybrid. That would be a waste. Go ahead and get a 3 wood and work on your swing.

Actually, the next club I’d suggest buying would be another wedge. You’re going to drop a lot more strokes around the green than with your long clubs, so putting a sand wedge in your bag and learning to chip and pitch with it will really do your game good.
