Question
Do you think that I have a good golf set?

I’m 14 years old with about a 12-13 handicap. I have been playing for only around six months. I am going to try out for the Freshman golf team at my school so I want to know if my clubs are up to par.

Driver: Taylormade r7 460 w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue 45 gram shaft, reg. flex.

3 and 5 woods: Taylormade r7 titanium w/Grafalloy Prolaunch Blue 55 gram shafts, reg. flex.

4 and 5 Hybrids: Callaway X-Hybrid w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Hybrid shafts, reg. flex.

6-7 irons: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Wide Sole Irons w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Iron shafts, reg. flex.

8-PW: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Iron shafts, reg. flex.

51, 56, 61 degree Wedges: Taylormade Rac Black TP w/True Temper GS 75 Wedge Shaft (lightest steel shaft on market, 75 grams.)

Putter: Odyssey Tri-Ball SRT Putter, 34 inches.

Ball: Callaway HX Tour 56

If you think that there is something wrong with it, please say so.

Thank you.
Hey ryan N, I actually am a 12 handicap. I practice almost everyday for 5-6 hours and get some lessons along the way. You obviously don’t know what hard work brings.
Hey BRENT F, I earned those clubs, my parents didn’t spend a cent. . I caddied, and cleaned clubs at my course for years. I also work at a local Golfsmith. And yes, those clubs are custom fitted to my swing and body measurements.
Hey fat_albert_999, If you do some research, or know anything about golf, you will know that a 3-iron is 19 degrees loft and so is a 5-wood.

Answered by Dimitriy G
Yeah, I do
Answered by ryan N
yeah pretty good set and there is no way that you have been playing for 6 mouths and have a 12 handicap nice try hahahh
Answered by Tulsen
Yes, if you’re being honest with your equipment list it certainly sounds like you have a top notch, professional set of clubs in your bag. You may want to try the Nike ONE (black) golf ball instead of the CHX Tour 56. I find it to be slightly longer and easier to control (spin) than the Callaway ball. Lastly, and this is solely a personal comment, I managed to knock 4-6 strokes off my game after switching from a tri-ball to a dual-ball putter – also Odyssey. Best wishes!
Answered by BRENT F
ksinghvir – Young man I would say this. Are your clubs fitted to your body type and swing? Because if they are not your parents have wasted a lot of money buying you those clubs. Those are expensive clubs that you have. Expensive isn’t always the best, go get them fitted, if you haven’t had them fitted already. Good luck trying out for your Freshman golf team.
A response to your comment:
Good for you. The best lesson you learned is the value of hard work (both caddieing and practicing to bring your handicap down). When you get older, stronger and better, believe me you will, Switch to steel in your irons, and get irons with less offset as you will want to be able to keep your ball flight down. They will also provide you with more workability.
Skidude – 5’5″? 315? The yardage at your golf course is off. Or maybe since your name is Skidude you play at 10,000 ft. altitude. Bring your game down to FL.(at sea level) doubt it’s 315 here.
Answered by Skidude
They are a good set of clubs. Those wide soled irons you got make it just about impossible to work the ball. Get narrower soles for ball workability. No offense, but I think you question isn’t really a question. You just need a reason to brag. I’m 15 years old, 5 foot, 5 inches tall, and can rip the ball 315 yards. I’ve done it about 8 times. I got an eagle on a 295 yard par 4. Drove the green, and one putt. How ’bout that for bragging.
Question
im a 13 year old boy and im currently in womens golf clubs. i just ordered ping g5 mens irons(standard length, purple dot) and a ping g10 24 degree hybrid. i was wondering wut driver i should get.i dont wunt to get a ping driver because ive hit demos and didnt hit them very well
my average drive is 195 yards my swing speeds 75mph and my ball flight is a slight cut. i have trouble gettin the balll into the air w/ a mens driver so i need a high launch. idont want a nike cuz i hit the demo very short and low.i was thinkin a cobra speed ld or s9-1 or titleist 909 d comp.possibly a ping rapture
Answered by Sweet Cat
No!
Answered by Frank P
ok well definietly check into nike, not real exspensive and is great equiptment.

If your coming into mens clubs i would get a diamana or whatever the standard shaft is, regular flex tho so then you can have it for a while

Probably around 9 or 10 degrees of loft, but i dont know your swing speed or ball flight

Good Luck!

Answered by Tommy
It really depends on what u’re weak spot is in driving, but I would get a Nike Sasqutch sumo 5000 driver 10-13 degrees of loft, regular shaft. I used it when I was u’re age it is a very good club, and it has a very forgiving face.
Answered by Michael B
callaway ft-IQ and r9 driver are nice
Answered by MarcD-CAFC
Some of the previous suggestions are way off the mark, you need a really forgiving driver that can also give you some distance, from personal experience I would suggest the 2008 King Cobra FP Speed, it has a large head with a really low centre of gravity, which means it will help you to stop coming down steep on the ball. I have the 9.5 Stiff but for you i would suggest the 10.5 Reg. As forgiving as it is, I can still hit 300 no problem, and that’s a luxury when you consider forgiving clubs normally give up distance for forgivness. Hope this helps.

I earned these clubs by caddying and cleaning clubs at my home course for years. I also work at a local Golfsmith during the summer and after school.
Oh yeah, they are custom fitted to my swing and my body measurements.
I’ve only been playing golf for 8 months. I practice for about 6 hours each day and don’t take lessons.

Answered by phantasmo
golf is a very mental game. if you don’t like something in your set then try others. cuz if you have a bad feeling about a club, you’ll end up hitting it worse. it’s all about trusting your swing and your equipment.
Answered by Wise beyond your years
Sounds like the freshmen team will be lucky to have you on board.

Just remember Tiger Woods can beat us with a set of clubs he picks up at Wal-Mart on his way to the course.

What this means is that the skill and talent of a player is far more important then the equipment.

Yes clubs are important. But a good swing made with a bad club will always produce a better shot than a bad swing with a good club.

Fairways and greens young man. Hope to see you on tour some day.

Answered by Ltgolf
I think you have an excellent set of clubs. It seems you made the right choices putting them togeather.

However it doesnt matter what any one else things , it only matters what you think and I believe you feel very good about the set.

Your freshman golf team is going to get a great new addition, just relax and play your own game when trying out.

Good luck and see you on the PGA tour in about 10 years.

That is an expensive set of clubs. Sounds like you are really into the game and putting them to good use!

Hey bleu_devil6, My family is not rich at all, like i said to ohiogolfer, they’re a result of my years of hard work.

ksing:

Good grief….you have more money wrapped up in your current set of clubs than I’ve paid for every set I’ve owned in my entire life!!!

I would say you’re either a very hard working young man to be able to afford clubs like that, or very lucky.

I would say this though. I have a set of Cleveland TA3′s that were used that I paid $ 120.00, my driver is a Cleveland Launcher…..not a 460….a 310! My three wood is a Callaway S2H2 that I’ve used since I was 17 (I’m 31 now). My putter is a Ping Anser that I’ve used since I was 17. My lob and sand wedges are Cleveland 588′s that have more rust on them than a 1982 Datsun sitting in the snow belt for 10 years.

Oh yeah, my 4 wood is a Tommy Armour ‘Exculpator’…you’ve probably never heard of it, but it’s a sweet club. Everything except the driver has a TT X100 shaft…..

My whole set and bag cost me less than your driver…..but I took those clubs and shot even par here in Northeastern Ohio the other day (47 degrees F).

So after all this, my point is twofold.

1) It’s not the arrow, it’s the indian.

and

2) It’s not how awesome your clubs are, but how well they fit your swing that counts.

Good luck, I hope you shoot lights out this year and win state!!!

Answered by James R
Awesome set…a lot better equipment than I had when I was your age…no comparison at all. Callaway, Taylor Made, and Titleist make great products.

I don’t think so. With a 12-13 handicap, your swing is not developed yet to the point where it’s going to stay. As your swing develops and gets better, you need to be able to adjust the fitting of your clubs. With all the $ you have tied up in those, it will be a psychologically tough thing to do to let go of them when a new measurement comes.

With cheap clubs (and really, that’s all relative, Tiger could just throw them all in the trash if he felt a change coming…) it’s easier to accept the changes that come with improvement and those that come with coaching. When one day, you hit a $ 5 putter pure, it’ll be hard to let go of the expensive one.

I have about a 18 handicap. I play the same driver I bought 23 yrs ago… don’t spend the money. One day, I decided I was going to buy whatever putter I would hit the best. I tried out a bunch, without looking at prices, narrowed it down, and at last found the perfect one. I was pleasantly surprised that it was $ 16. The 2nd thru 5th place putters were all over $ 100.

Hit what you hit well. And don’t ever spend so much that it’ll be hard to let go of a club.

Your story lacks credibility. I think you are just bragging, but if true you have a wonderful set of clubs (something I think you know already), and you should be playing on the PGA tour in no time.

  2. CM says:

It doesn’t matter what type of clubs you have. What matters is how much fun you are having and how well you shoot. Yes, better clubs can help you shoot lower scores and have more fun, but you will make the team based on your ability, not your clubs.

  3. old school says:

As long as they are custom fit, they are OK.

  4. Michael S says:

yea u have a great set i wish i had those

  5. fat_albert_999 says:

No 3 iron? 5 wood to 4 iron is a pretty big jump in distance. You should ditch the 61 degree wedge and get a hybrid 3 iron or a 7 wood to fill in the gap.

  6. Richard F says:

First off–you know what kind of clubs you have and you know where they stand on the list of being say “good”. Personally I think the Callaway irons were a waste of money, but thats mainly because I think irons that have a sole thicker than a golf ball to be pointless. You should have went with–if you want Callaway–maybe something like the X-Tour’s or even the X-18 Pro Series Model. And you say your 14–well a 34-inch putter is about the right length if you are say–5’8″. Those balls are good ball’s I play them myself–but there is a difference and why I play them and why you would play them–wish there were old Balata balls around still like when I was in high school.

  7. golf freak says:

That is a great set of clubs. The only recommendation i can make is dependant on how fast your club speed is you might want to consider steel shafted irons. if you club speed is 95 mph or above you need either firm graphite shafts or firm or uniflex steel shafts.

  8. Ξ¤‛§їмгай¤’Ξ says:

You have an excellent set of clubs and I wish you good luck in the future. There is a catch though, it doesn’t matter how good or expensive your equipment is, all that matters is that you put them to good use and have fun while playing with them! I hope you make the team! (I hope you remember what I said)

  9. 3GOLDS says:

Wow………that’s a very impressive bag of clubs you have there…
Congrats on doing so well…..With all the practising and lessons you are getting I’m sure your going to be a scratch golfer in no time!!!

Only you can tell if these clubs are working for you…..some golfers prefer different drivers…irons…wedges, and putters…its a personal preference….but I sure don’t see anything wrong with yours!!!

Good Luck to you…..keep up the hard work….and it will pay off for you when it counts!!

  10. harrison c says:

these r ok clubs but if you wat better control switch to the pro v1!

  11. JPGR says:

You’ve got the hots for Taylormade and Callaway stuff huh? The clubs are only the tools you might need to play the game, but the clubs need a player who can consistently have solid swings. Have you ever thought of getting lessons from a pro? It’s not to say you’re not play good, but I think you have the potential to do better! Good luck with golf and have fun! Nice choices!

  12. eddiedayeti says:

Those are some of the BEST clubs on the market. You must have done A LOT of work to earn that much money. If you don’t like the clubs, though, it doesn’t matter what they are. I own a $ 30 Wilson Harmonized putter, and I really like it. It’s all opinion. I got an answer from some guy when I asked a golf equipment question that said he got a Ram 3-wood for 10 bucks. Who knows?

  13. Madman says:

It sounds like you have a great set of clubs. The main thing you are looking for in your set of clubs is that they give you confidence in your next shot.
If you feel good with them, then stick with them. Good luck!

  14. Jimmy says:

Listen, I’ve worked at a course for a while, and there is a saying I’ve come up with:

“It’s not the clubs in the bag, it’s the game in your hands.”

These kids on your team aren’t going to care if you have unreleased Titlelist blades that are Uranium shafted and a driver with the sweet spot the size of a Chrysler; they want someone who can play. I’ve seen guys at the course with over a grand in their clubs that won’t EVER break 100. And, i’ve seen guys with rental clubs, a flying lady, and flip flops shoot par.

My point: go out, shoot 70, and let your scorecard say something about who you are as a golfer, not the crap you can pay for.
